Nipple Piercing

Sorry if this has been done before. Am popping in from Third Tri

I had my nipple pierced 6 years ago. when I got pregnant I was totally against breastfeeding so never thought about it. But as time has gone on I am going to give it a go. Obviously I need to take the bloody thing out, but it is too tight, so am going to have to ask the midwife or go to a shop to get them to do it (I feel a bit sad about it though, taking it out as unlike my belly it will close up!!)

Anyway, has anyone on here had it done and gone on to bf? Can I expect any problems or should it be ok? It the milk gonna squirt out in all directions??

I have no idea. It needs to come out asap as my nipples are getting bigger and the bar doesn't fit anymore.

I had both nipples pierced at various times, and I BF my son with no problems. I have a little scar tissue on my left nipple too, from where my bar was, but it was never an issue

Haha, I remember milk squirting out all over the place when I leaned on my boob once, but I don't think that's limited to people who've had piercings!!

It leaks more out the old holes, but other than that milk still comes out of the nipple fine!

I used to have my left one pierced, it'd been out for a while but there's still a hole. It hasn't affected feeding at all.

Hi, sorry to crash the thread but I have one pierced nipple and intend on breastfeeding.

Can I ask when I should take my bar out. Is now too early or will it give it time for the hole to shrink down and perhaps cause less of an issue...?

All websites on BF who mention it are very negative about piercings and I would just like some good honest unbiased advice!!

I took mine out at around 20 weeks and it has casused no problems at all.

I'd try to take a piercing out sooner rather than later, but that's just my opinion - it's not based on any medical experience or anything! I don't understand why people are so negative about it to be honest. I've a couple of other friends who've BF after piercings too.

I took mine out at about 12 weeks, I think. I wanted to give it plenty of time to heal. I'm not BF'ing at the mo (I'm expressing though) and I've found that milk does come out of the piercing holes!

I used to have both mine pierced. I had problems breastfeeding and in the end switched to formula because for some unknown reason my LO wasnt getting enough and wasnt gaining any weight on breastmilk, even though my lactation consultant said my latch was fine, she thought it may be low supply or insufficient suck. But I think it may have been due to the piercings maybe ruined my milk ducts. Not sure though but it does make since that a percentage of people would have problems because of it.

Hmm, so it looks like I need to be taking it out now really to be on the safe side....

I saw my MW earlier and asked her but she said she didn't know but would ask the BF counsellers and let me know.

I have my heart sooo set on BF but feel gutted I have to take my bar out. I've had it about 15 yrs and is one of the few piercings i have left. [sob]
