HI, I´ve not had my period for 5 straight months. Its frustrating to say the least. Doc says I´ve got hyperactive thyroid (underactive) and I´m currently on my 8th day taking the medicine to help it.

Does anybody have this problem? Hyperactive thyroid -> Missing periods? I normally have pretty regular periods but around the same time, my period stopped and I developed throat pains whenever I talk. After countless doctor visits, I realized that it might be something due to the hormones disorder.

I´ve got a meeting at the hormone specialist on 23/12 to check it out. If my period still doesn´t come, my gynae wants me to go on BCP for 1/2 months to kick-start it. HOwever, I´ve heard a lot of horror stories about the period not coming back with BCP.

Has anybody kickedstarted your periods by using BCP?

I have hypothyroidism, which is underactive thyroid disease, but I've been on medicine for a year. I also have PCOS, which is why I don't have periods.

I was on the pill for one month, and my period came back, and actually stayed for 4 months. However now I'm going without. The doc put me on provera for 7 days, which is supposed to bring your period. Ask your gyne about that, maybe, too.

My mom had hypothyroid (underactive) when she was young and this caused her period to stop. I'm borderline hypothyroid and take medicine to help, but have never had irregular cycles.

Sounds like working with your doc is the way to go on this one. Good luck!

i had to have progesterone to get mine going, go to docs and ask him about it

xx

Hey Emilyjean. I have the same as you...it hypothyroidism...underactive. I typed wrongly. Do you normally have periods? I used to have normal periods but it kinna stopped and was getting worried.....I think my AF is starting to show again, its been spotting since Friday, so Í´m really hoping that it is finally AF and I´m convinced that the thyroid medicine is really working.....:happydance: So you´ve tried provera? Is that better than going back to the BCP?

Hi Em_Maryland, Thanks for your advice. :) What´s "borderline" hypothyroid? I don´t know if I´m borderline or not...may I ask what´s "Male factor"?

Yeah I have another appt at the gynae in Jan 2010. And I´ll head to the endocrinologist just before Christmas to get my genes checked out. Its great that all the specialists are covered by insurance in Germany....I do pay extra for some of them, but its a fraction of the full price. Yeah, I´ll get everything checked out.

Am happy that at least I found out about my hypothyroism before I get pregnant in the first place.

Cheerios- I'm still trying provera, it hasn't worked yet! But I think it is better, because it doesn't stop you from getting pregnant, while the BCP does.

I used to get periods, but they've been missing for quite a while. It's always been pretty irregular.

Hey Emilyjean, cool I shall ask my doc about Provera if he suggests BCP to regulate my period. Well, I´m still spotting! Normally my AF starts really soon once it starts spotting. I can´t help but wonder if its implantation bleeding. But that would be like beyond great news, because I´ve always wanted to get pregnant before my birthday in Dec and Christmas.

Well, we´ll see..... if my period still doesn´t come by monday, I shall go get a HPT.
