Not sure if this is the right thread, but...

I'm not sure if this should go here or elsewhere, but I picked here because it is work related. Or rather, placement related.

I posted a few days ago that I'd been getting stabbing pains in my pelvis. On Friday, they got to the point where I called home and asked my dad to take me to hospital. Thankfully, baby is okay and they think it's a urine infection & sent results & Stuff to my GP for a double check. (This may be TMI, but I've had renal/bladder problems since birth & am have always been especially prone to urine infections, so I know if I have one).

Today, I had an appointment at the Job Centre to get my travel expenses for my placement at 9.20am. She couldn't get me in earlier so I had to tell the manager I was going to be late. I didn't get there till 10.30 as I rely on Glasgow's horrendous bus service to get around. (Didn't get out till 9.40, got on the bus at 10.15, would have been faster walking!)

When I went to leave at my normal time of 4.30, my manager asked me if I was going to stay later because I'd gotten in late. And here I on a tangent.

I had actually considered this during the shift out of courtosey. However, due to the preferential treatment that was being shown to the other work experience girl (example: in the almost six weeks, I've been told COUNTLESS times not to decode stock unless we have it to replace and to never leave the shop floor. This other girl does this repeatedly and the manager doesn't bat an eyelid, yet if I do it I get hell.), I decided not to.

So on leaving, she asks me about staying. She then goes onto explain that I have to "make up the hours I miss through appointments". I'm 15 weeks pregnant, and am on work experience placement while receiving Job Seekers Allowance. Something about her saying I HAVE to do these hours seems a bit fishy. Considering I'm very well aware that I am legally entitled to taking the time off to go to my scans and midwife appointments, and if I have problems such as what happened on Friday, they can't keep me. And I have to sign on and get my travel money so I can actually get to my placement. So I'm pretty sure if I cannot be told "no" without my manager breaking the law, she can't really tell me I have to come in and make this time up. My dad agrees & he's quite good with this stuff.

I know she's being unreasonable with the treatment of me and the other volunteers (my placement's in a charity shop) against the other work experience girl, but is she allowed to act this way about my hours?

Hi, firstly you are right in that you are entitled to your appointments and as such I hope she wasn't insinuating that you had to make them up, she would be in the wrong.

I'm not sure about your visits to have the formalities of your travel sorted, do you have a contact at the job centre you could ask? It would be worth clarifying with them as to what the expectations are. Perhaps what you can do to avoid this situation is make appointments in advance with the job centre and give ghe manager the schedule so ghat she is fully aware of when you will be in. I personally think she sounds unreasonable; you are there to gain valuable experience and she should be supporting you (given the environment you work in I'd expect a bit more caring from her!). Doesn't sound very confident as a manager or mentor to me which is a real shame.

Maybe ask for a one to one to discuss your training and development, at this you can update her on the expectations the job centre has on you so that there isn't any issues going forward.

Hope this helps,

Fifer x

She flat out said I had to make all my time off up after I was finished with the original placement. I'm going to ask my advisor about the appointments wit her when I go to sign on on Monday. The problem with getting a one-to-one is that I'm there 9.30 - 4.30 & she finishes at 2 so she can go and pick her children up from school.
