I am on annual leave at the minute, as is my manager (!) but when i go back to work next week i need to hand in my MAT B1 form and tell her when i want to start my maternity leave. I was just wondering if this HAS to be done in writing and if so, what i should include in the letter?

Did any of you say when you were planning to return to work, or is that something i can negotiate later? It's my intention to take 9 months off, so should i say that in the letter? And do i have to mention that i am planning to return part-time or does that come later on?

Thanks :thumbup:

It'll be different from place to place I guess. At my work I just informed my manager when I was going off. I then forwarded my MAT B1 to the HR dept who then contacted me asking when I wanted my maternity pay to start. I didn't have to tell them when I was returning-they assume you'll take 60 weeks and if I want to come back earlier I need to give 8 weeks notice.

We also have a return to work meeting to discuss going p/t etc but as I said each company will be different. Sorry I couldn't be helpful with the letter but I'd seach the posts on here as I'm sure someone will have posted what they sent. X

I think you're supposed to give a date of intended return along with when you want to leave to go on maternity. You're also supposed to try and negotiate the change in working hours befor you go onto maternity leave I think. I read a booklet about this the other day but it was all a bit confusing. I think you can find template letters for this kind of thing on the internet xx

ETA: the booklet was in my bounty pack, you might have it too xx

I dont think you have to do it in writing, think its only if they request it.

Im under the impression that you go on maternity leave and 8 weeks before your due back you ring and tell them your coming back and that you want them to consider hour change

Hi hun,

I'm handing this letter to my hr department tomorrow;
https://www.babyandbump.com/pregnan...-maternity-leave-letter-okay-im-clueless.html

I dont think it necessarily needs to be in writing but I'm doing it so its all proper etc

You do have to give them an intended date of when you plan to return to work, but as above you can change it but you need to give them notice.

I think it's best in writing.

I kept mine simple. The date I will commence leave and start SMP, and I did say that I intend to return - just not WHEN. As others have said, you just have to give 8 weeks notice before you wish to return. You also CAN'T apply for flexible working until after the baby is born... in the official course of things.

Thanks for the replies ladies :thumbup:

I found a sample letter online which i was going to use, but then i got in touch with the childcare coordinator where i work and it turns out all she needs from me is my MAT B1 and a completed application form, which literally just asked how long i have worked for them, and when i want to start my mat leave, which both me and my manager had to sign.

Handed it in this morning so fingers crossed that's me sorted :thumbup:
