Nuchal Translucency

Just wondering if anyone is not doing a nuchal Translucency at 12 weeks.
I'm not, anyone else opting out too?

I've never done it with any of my other 3 kiddos...my husband and I are of the approach that we would continue with the pregnancy regardless of results.

I also do find it can add some extra stress as some 'abnormal' findings end up normal in the end.

We were debating about opting out but decided to schedule it last minute.

Never had it with any of mine- however, if I get that far this time, I am choosing to. It won't change anything, I just want to see if there are any markers due to previous late lisses x

I'm so sorry for your losses, good luck I hope everything comes back normal on your scan ☺

I didn't get it because my doctor offered me the Panorama instead.
Would have been nice to see my baby but blood tests have better accuracy. Plus, I got to find out that she's a little girl :)

Aw congrats on your baby girl ☺

Congrats on your girl!! :D I have to wait two more weeks at least ; (

I did not get the scan because it won't change the outcome and I would not have an abortion no matter what risk for a condition was determined. There are so many cases where the baby turned out perfectly fine even with the most grave prognosis. Plus from my holistic point of view I don't believe interrupting a pregnancy is good for the body at all. And my health and hormones have been out of balance before. It was hard work getting back on track.
Plus I would want to meet and hold my baby even if he/ she was destined to die days later.
So to me this test is absolutely useless and would only cause stress if a small risk is determined.

I didn't get it because I chose to have the Harmony test instead. Having both was not an option.

Many babies have conditions which need life saving immediate treatment. I can appreciate we all want our babies but have you thought of the fact that what if they are born poorly and require immediate care? Wouldn't it be better that the prognosis was known so the specialist care (as well as the required specialists) are ready for the baby.

I'm just saying as from my previous experience of having a heart baby, the NT scans can determine so much and having a heart condition, time was of the essence. She needed open heart surgery.

Best wishes to all ladies

That's a very valid point. Is the NT scan the only one that can determine such heart conditions or could other ultrasounds (say the 19/20 week one)?

I ALWAYS get the NT scan...it's a chance to see my baby. Not everyone gets the NT scan because they would abort the pregnancy if something were wrong. I would NEVER EVER abort a pregnancy, unless my health were in jeopardy...don't make the assumption thats the reason people have the NT scan.

The normally scheduled scans don't always pick up everything. I know a woman (not personally as I've only met her once; she's a local news anchor who blogged about her experience) who had a baby with down syndrome that wasn't picked up on the regular scans throughout her pregnancy.

edit to add: wanted to say too that not everyone has the scan with the intention of aborting if something is wrong. I had it bc I was planning delivery in a smallish hospital and if something had been wrong with baby, I'd have wanted to deliver at a larger hospital with a neonatal unit. It's all in what you're comfortable with. My sister is really laid back and just goes with the flow, doesn't worry much and never had anything extra. I'm one of those people who needs information or I just worry myself silly, so I had it.

I'm getting it, just to see baby again. Whether the outcome it is a baby and we will love it, but it would also help to mental prepare myself as well as any other treatment or specialist that need to be around too

Didn't mean to imply if something were wrong people would abort, my apologies if it came off that way!

Mine is scheduled for 14 weeks. I am doing it for a couple reasons..

#1. Peace of mind. I expect it to turn out perfectly fine and it will take some stress off of me and my husband.

#2. If anything does come up, I'm not doing any of the invasive testing and I'm not terminating but I can be better prepared for the baby when it comes.

Edited to add: And it's only $10 with my insurance and a chance to get an extra peek at baby!!

Here we have fetal echocardiography done between 18-24 weeks to determine the risk. If needed more testing can also be done. Also the heartbeat is usually monitored even prior to that. It isn't as accurate as echocardiography, but it can help detect severe early problems.
My OB is actually against the test too for various reasons.
No other conditions that require immediate treatment are tested during the NT scan here. Idk about other places however.

@Scout
Not wanting an abortion no matter the results was just one of my personal reasons because a good number will chose to abort too.

I just did panorama and will be doing the NT measurements at 12 weeks as well. we feel strongly about first trimester screening.
