After a very lengthy conversation on Facebook what is everyone's view on eating nuts during pregnancy?

I've been eating peanut butter for the majority of my pregnancy and a friend is horrified!

I've never seen any valid study showing that eating nuts during pregnancy will have any effect on your baby ;)

Peanuts aren't actually nuts ; ) they're a type of pea (just to make things confusing haha)

I've been steering clear of actual nuts, coz we have a high allergy rate in our family, and eating nuts can apparently increase the risk of LO having various allergies.

They only say to steer clear of peanuts if someone in your family has a peanut allergy, because there's the chance it's more likely to pass that onto LO

Its been in the news recently that there is no established link between eating nuts and your baby developing an allergy etc, and it was only considered unsafe if you or family had allergies already, eat away!! :haha:

I asked the doctor about this at my first appointment at 8 weeks. She said there is 110% no problem with eating peanuts if I didn't have an allergy to them. They are completely safe and very good for you. So enjoy.

Your not suppose to eat nuts?!?!? Geez what next! I eat nuts everyday, and peanut butter at least twice a week. Ive never heard anything about eating nuts? Some people are just NUTS :haha:

The other day I posted on face book that I had a good day at the pool and my sister was horrified I went to the pool! I told her my belly was covered and I wear sunscreen and she said "What if baby gets hot? or burned? Your not suppose to be outside." umm so for 9 months im suppose to be locked up in the house?

Ridiculous. I've been eating nuts like they're going out of fashion!
There are two possible reasons why you shouldn't eat them; if there's a history of nut allergy in yours or your partner's family, or a history of asthma. Otherwise eat away!

My midwife has never told me not to eat nuts and when I asked her she looked puzzled and said the only reason not to is if YOU have an allergy to them. x

The reason I'm not having them is because both mum and I have asthma and eczema, as well as mum having a wheat intolerance, so I'm steering clear. The chances are that she'll have allergies in one form or another, because of the strong association through our family, but if I can reduce that for her by not having nuts for a few months, I'm willing to do it. I've had asthma for 18 years, and if there's a way of reducing the chance of her getting it too, I'll try anything. It's not much to ask really :)

my midwife was like its the most serious crime to eat peanuts during pregnancy lmao, but I looked into it and studies say you should only avoid them if immediate family (on either side) are allergic. So I just dont tell my mw that i am :haha: x

Not only do I eat nuts, but I was told to do so by my specialist. I have gestational diabetes and that is one of the protein snacks they recommended for me!

good sourse of protein and fibre :) when i had my son nearly 10 yrs ago the advice from the UK gvmnt and therefore mw's was that pregnant women should not eat them as they thought there was a link to peanut allergies, that advice has now changed (rather unsurprisingly) x

I had never heard of restricting nuts anywhere. Not from any pregnancy book, any of my OB's etc, until my sister who was pregnant was told by her Dr not to eat peanuts. I was like ya right!! It's probably due to the fact that there is a TEENY TINY chance of baby developing an allergy after birth?? But wow, so many restrictions. I dont eat peanuts often, but I do have the occasional PB&J or snickers bar. And I will continue to eat them. I think if you are worried about allergies, then once your child is born you should wait the recommended 3 years(if your family has an allergy history) before giving them any peanuts.
