Nystan - Nystatin for Oral Thrush.

for a young baby you open the capsules and mix it with a small quantity of their usual milk or water and then wipe it inside their mouths so they can swallow it, the contents of the probiotic capsules are perfectly safe for babies; its just a hassle to open them, if you find it a hassle you can get probiotic powder for babies and children-its the same as the capsules just 'loose' or in individual paper sachets xx

The gel is the best! I bought it at boots, when I lost a tube,so you dont even need to go to gp.The nystan stuff is crap tbh:haha:

Thank you Summer Rain - you are always coming to my rescue!! xx
We have been using the Nystan since Tuesday and it has improved a bit on his tongue but has actually spread on his cheeks and roof of his mouth now so maybe it's worse?! Can I buy probiotic powder for babies from chemist? I find the daktarin gel really hard to apply as he clamps down on my finger and sucks it! Will try again though I think.

The reason the gel is not recommended for young babies anymore is that it needs to be applied carefully and in a small quantity, nothing to do with the ingredients and more for people who may buy the gel OTC and use too much which could be a choking hazard; if your GP has advised you to use it it is perfectly fine and safe. xx

^^ Echo this - my DD and I both had thrush when I was feeding her and Nystatin did nothing for her. After doing my research on Daktarin I decided I would use it. I bought it OTT (lied and said it was for DH ) and it worked a treat.

How long did it take to clear?

I would also like to know how long it is supposed to take to clear up??

You should notice an improvement within 3/4 days. How long it takes to totally clear varies.

we used it, cleared LOs up in about 3 days

Nystatin did work for us btw! It took a few days and then it cleared up fine :)

My LO just finished taking that for his thrush. He spit most of it out every time but it worked and his thrush is better.

Not sure if you can buy it from most chemists but I have seen it online, one of the most famous brands is lepicol, optibac also do one xx

yes my son has had thrush with his inhalers as well, and the gel works way better, but what worked the best for us was Gentian Violet, although the only drawback is it makes their mouth purple lol. Not so great for pictures or outings, but it does work fast!

Well it seems much better this morning (or now afternoon!). Pretty much all gone on his tongue and lips, just a bit on his cheeks. Not sure whether it was the daktarin or nystan that did it but whatever it is I'm pleased it is going!!!
Thank you all so much again ladies! I really don't know what I'd do without you!! xxx

Madison won't take it either! She takes other medicine just fine, but she spits all of this out! She also puked after we gave it to her twice, so her doctor just said to stop giving it to her
