Hi ladies sorry bit off topic, my 10 year old caught lice I'm guessing from a helmet she was borrowing from the stables...its been over a month now and they keep coming back. I had her dad do the pesticide shampoo on her seeing as how I can't be around that but it didn't work. Have any of your kids had lice that you have successfully treated with a non toxic product that would be safe for me to use on her? I need some encouraging stories as this is really getting us down, we can't seem to get rid of them. So far my toddler and I have been unaffected but my 10 year old is starting to get depressed she can't sit on the couches or lay on the floor or anything so she doesn't contaminate any pillows or anything, it sucks! We did just do this Clearlice stuff that seems to be non toxic the other day but its too early to tell yet if that has done the trick...

Whenever me my brother or my little sister had headlice my mum always got rid of them within 24 hours no word of a lie she went on a serious mission and they would be gone completely. I am at work at the moment but I finish at 9 so as soon as I am home I will ring her and ask for you! Both me and my sister had hair long enough to sit on and she still managed to get rid quickly so I'll find out what she did for you if you can just hang on for an hour!

I'm feeling all itchy now :p lol but seriously try not to worry and I'll message you as soon as I've spoken to her!

Hi hun, when any of mine get headlice I just use lots of conditioner and a fine tooth lice comb. Do it every couple of day and within a week all lice and eggs should be gone. Lice are immune to most over the counter treatments anyway so this works best for us. Leave the conditioner in while you comb through it

hey minkie, i'm so sorry! We had lice in our house earlier this year, and it was HORRIBLE!
My oldest son brought it from his grandmother's (where his aunt had it) and my 2 year old got it from him. Then I got it. My husband didnt know how t otreat it so I had to treat all 3 of us. For the oldest, i cut his hair short (he likes it shaved anyway) and treated with Nix. For the little one I treated with Nix as well. For me, nix wasnt working so I used mayonaise in my hair for an hour, then rinsed and put in white vinegar for an hour. Used nix and then rinsed out. Brushed the lice right out.. We struggled w/ the 2yr old for a while.. th trick is you have to pick out every single nit you see. All washables need to be washed and dried in a dryer (go to laundry mat if you dont have a dryer) because the heat will kill them. Anything that cant be washed, like stuffed animals , etc. need to be put in a garbage bag and placed in an attic or somewhere the sun can heat them. Buy the spray for household furniture and spray everything in her room and around the house that is cloth. After you treat her with Nix (follow directions on bottle), pick out the nits and make sure to put them in a can/cup something where they cannot jump out of and when you are done blow dry her hair. Go back through and look at it again and if there is even 1 lice egg or alive left, do another treatment.
It's a lot of work, and if you do it right it should not take less than 8 hours, seriously.
Good luck!

baby oil and condiotioner and mayonnaise suffocates the lice!!!! if u use oils tho dont wet the hair to shampoo it... put shampoo straight onto the hair nd lather up so that it removes the oil.. then wash it....xx

also forgot, make sure she never shares a hat, helmet, brush or comb with anyone. Every member of the house should have their own brush/comb and hair ties, etc. ;)

Hedrin here in the UK is fantastic - or the nitty gritty comb and loads and loads of conditioner!

It's not getting rid of the nits I had trouble with, it's been stopping my girls getting re-infested with them as there's a few families locally that just don't seem to care :( It's got better now they're older though and we've not had them for a while.

Vinegar her hair once a week for a months, leave on till it air dries,

Then shampoo, loads of conditioner and a Nitty Gritty Comb. Do her hair every day for a month to kill of the new crawlies.

My 10 yr old had them start of the hols, they are all gone now.

Pain in the arse.

I second this, this worked a treat for my younger siblings, you have to literally saturate the hair in conditioner and comb through and as kel said, do it every couple of days for a while!

My Mum was just telling me about how she got rid of my cousins (who had them for months)
She used Original Listerine https://www.listerine.co.uk/?gclid=CO-GscLB6aMCFUj-2Aodnhs92g then vinegar and a nit comb. Worked amazing first treatment compared to the expensive stuff!

They are a nightmare my 11 yr old and 8 yr old get them as soon as they go back to school it takes one parent not to do them and thats it. I use the nitty gritty comb bcuz its the only comb that gets the eggs out six nits come out of one egg when the eggs are brown it means they havnt hatched when white means they have my oldest has got such thick curly long hair so its a pain in the ass when she does get them. I condition her hair and comb it everynight i just sit her on the floor and do it while im watching my soaps lol. Use a hard brush thro the hair too so it breaks the nits back. I actually have sectioned al her hair once and got the hoover sucker on them pmsl there grose. I hope my daughters dont come back shes starting the big school monday i dont want her scratching away urghhh its making me itch now lol x

I'm also in the states (Texas), and my ex-step-daughter used to bring lice to our house every other weekend, because her mother would not treat at her house. :(

The first time she had it, she gave it to me, so treating it was TOP priority. I used NIX and the nit comb, and my step-daughter and I both had very long hair. I also washed all of the bedding in the entire house with a bleach solution (even colored items can be washed in diluted bleach if you don't over-saturate) including towels, hand-towels, sheets, comforters, stuffed animals and anything pourous. There is also a spray (I believe it is by RID?) that you can use to spray your car really well if you have cloth seats, and your couches/chairs/carpet/large items that can't be washed.

And finally, if you have a comforter or quilt or other item that absolutely cannot be washed, put it in a garbage sack and store it away (it doesn't have to be in the sunlight) for 4-6 weeks. Lice are parasites that need a host in order to live. They die in a couple of weeks without food, but you want to give them enough time for their eggs to hatch and die as well. 4-6 weeks is a good time-frame for storing the bedding away in waiting for the lice to die.

I would recommend buying 2-3 cans of the aresol spray for your house though. You'll want to spray everything, including your carpet. Also, change out your vacuum cleaner bag and spray your vacuum thoroughly with it. If you have a mop, bleach that as well.

I got rid of the lice the first go-round! After that, every time my step-daughter would come to visit, I would make her strip all her clothes off in the laundry room and march straight back to the bathtub for a lice treatment before she could even do anything else at our house. Her clothes would go straight into the washer and her overnight bag would never enter our house - it stayed out in the garage! We had our own supply of clothes for her at our place.

Also, one tip to keep in mind. The nits or egg sacks that you see on the hair shaft take up to 2 weeks to visually see once an infestation has occured. Just because you don't see nits in your hair, doesn't mean you don't have the lice. EVERYONE IN THE HOUSE needs to be treated with lice shampoo, whether you think they have it or not. That could be why they keep coming back.

When both my girls were at primary school, they'd go to school nit free and be crawling again when they got home :( Lice don't grow to adult size that quick, they were being re-infested on a daily basis grrrrr. Hopefully we've finally seen the back of them now both are at secondary school!

I agree with what others have said - lots of conditioner and a nit comb. I get my son to sit in the bath while I get them out onto some kitchen towel.

Good luck!

This is what my mum said, LOADS of conditioner and some nit lotion aswell but the key is the conditioner and just a good nit comb. You need to comb it and comb it until there are no eggs or lice and you can get rid of them in a day. Oh and wash all the bedding and pillows, clothes etc. Good luck!!

I agree with the conditioner and nit comb ladies, safe and effective, thats all we use and at the beginning of the school year all the state school hand out this combo in a kit to the kids! Dont use any nit shampoos, whether natural or not on yourself whatever you do, the chemical ones and way too harsh for preggo ladies and the natural ones can contain essential oils that can bring on labour, just stick to the conditioner and good ole nit comb and you will get rid of the little bug a boos. Good luck hun, I know how frustrating they can be!

Ty so much for all the replys ladies...I had no idea it was such a common thing! I was using the plastic nit comb that came with the nix that her dad used at his house (my ex husband) so maybe that wasn't catching all the eggs, I would condition then comb then put her hair in ponytail for the rest of the day but I don't think that comb works, I will go buy the metAl one from the drug store tomorrow and see if that works better. I'm just praying I don't get it, I have kept my hair up in a tight bun since we saw she had it and seem to be ok so far knock on wood...I will try you suggestions when she gets back from her dads on Monday!

I actually wrote a university paper on head lice last year as part of an environmental engineering unit. I experimented with most of the chemical and natural remedies and the home ones as well. I did this after my daughters were absolutely plagued with them and I tried everything.

This is what works:

Firstly, don't use conditioner, use oil. Ordinary vegetable oil is fine. Conditioner will start to dry on the hair and become clumpy, giving lice places to hide. Oil stays 'wet', and is translucent so you can see what is coming out. Use a metal fine tooth ridged comb and section the hair so that no section is left undone. Wipe the comb (kitchen paper) after each pass through the hair. When you can no longer see any eggs/lice on the paper, wash the hair in a small amount of Dawn or any dishwashing liquid. Dishwashing liquid takes the oil out of the hair, shampoo will not. If your daughter has long hair, dry it with a blowdryer and if you have one, run a straightener over each section. You will hear the leftover lice and eggs pop under the straightener.

Most interesting part of my research and experimentation, is that there is absolutely NO NEED to wash all bedding, soft materials, etc. Absolute waste of time. As are pretty much any of the commercial preparations - lice are immune to their 'active' ingredients, so nit lotions, sprays and oils are wasting your time and money.

Hope that helps !
