Dont forget to shampoo the oil before getting it wet otherwise u will be left with very greasy hair and a head full of oil that is soooo hard to remove!!! its great tho as it suffocates the nits...

also to keep the nits at bay so thy dont go into ur hair try hairspray ....

hope u get rid of them soon...and yes it is very common so dont worry..xxx

hey sweetheart, i can personally say, everyone on here is right! it is horrible and unfortunately there are some mums out there in denial, and do not check their childrens hair!
my daughter gets them constantly from school.
buuut, i have found a good tea tree shampoo and conditioner plus a spray conditioner for combing (chemists), and also... this comb from a similar site... here in uk i paid 10 pounds for it, but its amazing, doesnt scratch my daughters head, and it gets so much out! it is well worth the money.

metal one with spiral teeth xx
i usually sit with her infront of me on floor, me on sofa, with a white sheet or pillow case going round her neck, so if anything falls out onto it you can see them easily and kill them straight away.
hope this helps, but i did find that comb a god send as the plastic ones hurt her and some of the metal ones do too, this one she loves and knows its her special after school comb, lol.

Geranium oil!!! Put a few drops in your condtioner and shampoo....this is a great way to get rid plus smells really nice too :)

i am actully going through the same thing right now. used the nix on her, did nothing. used tea tree oil helped somewhat, but still had a few left. last night i tried dawn disdetergent applied to her had let sit for one hour. rinsed washed with tea tree shampoo, rinsed conditioned and combed out. did not find any live lice just a few eggs. which i removed. good luck

OK ladies I am on a mission today to the drug store. Picking up one GOOD metal nit comb, then once she gets home will use oil (sounds like many different types of oils work) then comb, then shampoo (with a tea tree shampoo if i can find one) slather on leave in conditioner and comb again....dry with hair dryer and then use straightener put back hair in pony tail and spray with hairspray....then have a stiff drink and relax...oh wait nix the drink, im pregnant :dohh: ok cup of tea and relax and hope for the best, wash rinse and repeat the next day!

Most interesting part of my research and experimentation, is that there is absolutely NO NEED to wash all bedding, soft materials, etc. Absolute waste of time. As are pretty much any of the commercial preparations - lice are immune to their 'active' ingredients, so nit lotions, sprays and oils are wasting your time and money.

Hope that helps !

I sort of disagree with this. Lice can live for up to 2 weeks outside of a host. If you don't do something with your bedding, you will never get rid of the infestation. Lice may be immune to regular detergents, but I don't think they are immune to bleach and scalding water. And the chemicals in the spray for furniture/carpets are lethal as well. I only had the infestation one time. Thank god I got it all under control right away. I didn't do anything with oil or conditioner. I just used the NIX and the nit comb on her (and my) actual head.

Good luck!

My step daughter had lice for the longest time. I'm talking about over 6 months at least. We tried everything. Nix, Nit, home remedies like the vinagar for 2 hours and rinse and repeat. We washed everything constantly, had the spary (even sprayed the car down just to make sure) made sure she had her own pillow, brush and made sure she didn't lie on random places. It was horrible. We finaly got her hair cut short (mind you most hair cutting places won't take someone in with lice) but we lucked out and that finally got rid of them. As for me during this period (mind you I wasen't preggers at the time) I kept dying my hair and I never got them and neither did anyone else! I wish you the best in trying to get rid of these buggers! Good luck!

Nit comb. We had them soooo often in our house when I was young. Me and my sis had long straight clean hair so we attracted them like nobody's business. We used to just have evenings where we combed combed and recombed our hair.

Ugh We dealt with this with my daughter a few years ago. Chanti has the right idea!! We did all of that. Wash sheets and linens and such in super hot water and dry on the highest heat setting. We even used the spray in our vehicle and sent 3 cans to her classroom so the teacher could spray there as well. And the key is....get alllllllll of the nits and make sure you REPEAT the shampoo process in 2 weeks!!! It may take you hours but you have got to be very very tidious with the combing part. We didn't do the repeat wash 2 weeks later and they came right back. It took us about 4hrs to go through her hair. She was so upset and tired but it's what had to be done. Luckily, the rest of the family some how avoided it. Good luck!!!!!

Hi hun, when any of mine get headlice I just use lots of conditioner and a fine tooth lice comb. Do it every couple of day and within a week all lice and eggs should be gone. Lice are immune to most over the counter treatments anyway so this works best for us. Leave the conditioner in while you comb through it

I agree that lice are immune to over counter treatments and while some will kill the crawly lice they wont get the eggs so best thing to do is put lots of conditioner in the hair leave it in and comb through every other day with the nit comb it will get any live lice and eggs and should be clear within 2weeks! Good luck!

We dealt with this a few years ago. It went on for months because every time I would get rid of them the girls would get them 2 or 3 weeks later at school.

At first we tried the pesticide shampoos which 1) didn't work and 2) are dangerous they have nerve agents in them. Thats when I went the natural route.

This is what I finally did to rid us of the lice....
1) Put 1 jar of Mayo on each childs head.
2) Covered with a plastic bag and let it sit for 4 hours.
3) Wash and condition their hair.
4) Comb with a Nit comb to get the dead lice and eggs (repeat steps 3 and 4 every day for a week)

The mayo smothers the lice and they die, then you just have to remove the eggs. We also went ahead and cleaned all bedding, pillow cases etc. Vacuumed regularly and put all of our hair brushes in the freezer over night (this kills lice and the eggs) They never came back after that. Good Luck. I know how frustrating lice can be.

My Mum was just telling me about how she got rid of my cousins (who had them for months)
She used Original Listerine https://www.listerine.co.uk/?gclid=CO-GscLB6aMCFUj-2Aodnhs92g then vinegar and a nit comb. Worked amazing first treatment compared to the expensive stuff!

Totally Works. My niece got it really bad and thats what my sister used.

just figure i would update i used just dawn dishdetergent on her head the one night and rinsed with vinager the next day. well they are all gone. i am so happy!! will rewash with dawn tommarow just to be sure

Mayonnaise!! leave it on for 30 mins or so, it suffocates all the nits and it makes hair really glossy too. Make sure to shampoo about 4 times after though to get rid of the smell.

I'd like to use the tea tree oil or coconut/pepermint whatever is best as a preventative measure I've read the live don't like those oils for som
e reason, but I'm not sure how? Do u just put someoil on your hands and rub it in your hair when it's wet after a shower? Mix it with conditioner or shampoo? Any advice would be great on that, would like to try as many preventative measures on my 3 year old and myself as possible!!

You don't need to use a particular type of oil, ordinary kitchen veg or olive oil will do. You need to saturate DRY hair with oil, not wet (oil and water don't mix so you end up with notty hair you can't get a comb through). I use a spray bottle with a towel wrapped around the kids shoulders. You wash with dishwashing detergent to remove the oil at the end, not the beginning ! Shampoo won't remove oil, dishwashing detergent does.

The important thing to remember about oil (and conditioner, mayonnaise etc) is that is DOESN'T kill the lice, it merely stuns them. Make sure that the kitchen paper etc whatever you're wiping the comb on, gets tied up tightly in a plastic bag or ideally, burnt. I soak the comb in hot water for a day or so after I've used it, to drown any nits left in the comb.

Hi ladies sorry bit off topic, my 10 year old caught lice I'm guessing from a helmet she was borrowing from the stables...its been over a month now and they keep coming back. I had her dad do the pesticide shampoo on her seeing as how I can't be around that but it didn't work. Have any of your kids had lice that you have successfully treated with a non toxic product that would be safe for me to use on her? I need some encouraging stories as this is really getting us down, we can't seem to get rid of them. So far my toddler and I have been unaffected but my 10 year old is starting to get depressed she can't sit on the couches or lay on the floor or anything so she doesn't contaminate any pillows or anything, it sucks! We did just do this Clearlice stuff that seems to be non toxic the other day but its too early to tell yet if that has done the trick...

Hi, sorry to hijack your thread I am just nipping over from 1st, my daughter had lice constantly and I got a nitty gritty comb not sure if anyone has suggested these you can get them online, they pull the eggs out too which are what actually cause the problem, just put loads of conditioner on and do it every night and the problem will be solved in no time it worked for my DD and I was really struggling to get rid of them

One you have gotten rid of the nits using all those other methods always tie up your childs hair and put a big thick headband on and spray the hair with a solution of a few drops of tea tree oil and water.

For the tea tree oil you can either put some into her shampoo or what I like to do is fill an old hair spray bottle with water and pour in the oil. Then after bath/shower spray the hair with the tea tree oil water and then dry as normal.
