I've coped and pasted the Annual Society for Reproductive Medicine 2010 abstracts (USA latest research) on what we can do to improve our chances of a healthy pregnancy.

THE ENVIRONMENT, LIFESTYLE AND REPRODUCTION:

As reported last week in Connect, women, who weigh in the normal or slightly overweight range, are more likely to conceive with fertility treatment than obese women or those who are too thin. Similarly, men who are obese are more likely to have abnormal semen parameters.

There have been previous studies suggesting that an increase in cell phone use, particularly by men who keep the phone in their trouser pocket, may negatively impact sperm. This week researchers from Argentina reported that semen samples exposed to a laptop for 4 hours (please don’t ask how) demonstrated a decrease in motility and an increase in sperm break-down. Though the results are only preliminary it couldn’t hurt for men to keep their phones out of their pockets and their laptops off their laps.

Over one-third of healthy young adults are deficient in vitamin D. We know that vitamin D is important for skeletal health, but now researchers from California have reported that women with low vitamin D levels are less likely to conceive with IVF.

Another group of investigators from the University of Southern California found that the number of high quality embryos obtained at IVF was correlated with higher blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids. The authors believe that omega-3 supplementation may positively impact embryo quality. Interestingly, and quite unexpectedly, researchers from Harvard found that higher levels of mercury in the hair of women undergoing IVF was associated with a better treatment outcome. They suggest that this improvement in IVF outcome may have been related to fish consumption (perhaps an increase in omega-3 again).

The role of stress in infertility and the impact of stress on the outcome of treatment have been debated for years. This year, two studies addressing this question found that individuals with higher levels of stress were more likely to conceive than those with lower levels of stress. This highlights the fact that the relationship between stress and infertility is complex and remains poorly understood.

thanks for that im already on prenatal multi vitamins but im going to go buy some omega 3 tommorrow too x

I am a firm believe in omega 3... I've been taking it for a couple of years. My Dh started it when he got a poor SA .. and when we went for his IUI~ his sperm count AFTER the wash was double... I think that in conjunction with folic acid, multi vitamin, and cutting out alcohol helped contribute. Omega 3 has SOOO many health benefits.. there is a slew of information about how many great things it does !

Thanks for sharing that!

Thank you. I take Eskimo-3, it's expensive but it's the market leader for purity. You've got to be careful though as omega 3 oils all contain tiny amounts of heavy metals, dixoins, PCBs etc. (nasty stuff). Why I chose Eskimo-3 is because it's got the absolute lowest level of contaminants by far which I think is so important when you're trying to conceive (embryo really vulnerable to environmental contaminants in early weeks). It's really essential to take it during pregnancy too as the DHA helps baby's eye and brain development. I was taking 7mls a day of the Eskimo-3 liquid and it's really helped boost my mood (I suffer with depression). The liquid is a lot cheaper than the capsules.

But now since reading about the Californian research I've upped it to 10mls daily and got my OH taking it too! We've ordered 10 bottles of the stuff from a web-site where I saw it 15% cheaper than anywhere else. It's called Nature's Clock. Don't worry I don't work for them! But I do believe in omega-3 as I've really noticed a huge difference in my mood from taking it. Our Western diet is deficient in Omega-3 and vitamin D in particular. It's worth getting a vit. D blood test to check the level (I'm waiting for my result) too.

These things do take around 3 months to get fully into your system. I'm taking Royal Jelly/Bee pollen too for egg quality, although I don't think it's got specific scientific data on it whereas Omega-3 does, my OH and I are taking it because Fergie was having trouble conceiving with fertility drugs and the RJ/BP worked for her twice.

I'm going for my first IVF in April, I'm so scared. We had so hoped to conceive naturally but we've got 3 cycles left, so fingers crossed the supplements might do the trick. It's worth both taking vitamin C 1000mg daily too, but if you're under a clinic it's probably best you check they're happy for you to take these things. Babydust to you too! xxx

I totally agree with you ladies. Omega 3 is so so important!

This is my list of top 3 supplements while trying to conceive:

1. Folic acid
2. Omega 3 (purest kind, it will be the more expensive one on the shelf - haha.)
3. Vitamin C (1000mg)

I also took a multi-vitamin for preconception.
