Because a lot of you who've seen me post in 1st tri have only seen me talk about my sponge cravings, i thought i'd start off with saying that this is a serious thread from me D: anywayss im 16yo and only 3wks preg. (for those that dont know, only tested cos af didnt feel like it was coming and sure enough it aint gona!). me and my OH still live with our parents. we are hoping to move out into a flat well before 9 months. he is currently working part time but has so much overtime its basically full time. i handed my cv's out to a lot of places yesterday and have two interviews for thursday already. i have a few worries though. one is, do i have to mention that i am pregnant so early on? i plan to work for as long as i can during my pregnancy. i am worried that they will drop me like a stone straight away if i tell them. also both are only offering part time. cuz i am young i can only earn like £4 something an hour. i was thinking of working both jobs on different days to earn more money for flat and baby - am i allowed to do this or will i be earning too much? or would it just be like a full time wage? this is so confusing :(

You can work both jobs - there's no such thing as 'earning too much' LOL - just make sure it's all above board and you're getting proper wage slips and paying the tax due on it. Also, it's up to the employers really which days you work so it may not be possible for you to do both.

As an employer (we have a website and a shop, and employ four people as well as myself and my partner, and have a work experience boy helping too) I would be seriously peeved if you hadn't mentioned at interview stage that you knew you were pregnant, even if you did intend to work up until birth. As far as I'm aware you don't *have* to mention it - not too clued up on an employee's rights tbh, I have a lawyer for that :) - but it would be a good start to a working relationship to be honest from the beginning. I'm not going to lie though, it will make it more difficult to find work if you tell them - it shouldn't, but it will. :(

lol, i just thought cuz i was young i could only earn minimum wage , i was wondering if that meant i could only receive that from one job or if i could get minimum wage from both. when i handed my cv in i briefly discussed the possibility of adjusting days if need be and they were both okay with that since they only needed people on part time anyway. mm i spose i'd be the same, about getting a bit pissed if i wasnt told about an employee being pregnant. yer, i kinda guessed it'd effect my work which is why i didnt want to say anything (especially like some people dont say stuff til they got the 12 week scan or whatever, but i guess theyd been in their jobs for a while), but i dont want to upset my employer either. thanks for the advice:D

Minimum wage is the lowest amount of money that an employer can pay someone per hour. It has nothing to do with how much an employee (you) can earn. You can work all the hours god sends on minimum wage if you like.

When I was 16 I was being paid £5.52 an hour so you won't necessarily be paid £4. I wouldn't tell them I was pregnant if I were you, especially as it's early days. I didn't tell anyone at my work until I was 12 weeks even though I've worked there for over a year. x

That's just it, you've worked there over a year, it's not the same scenario. You can't get sacked for being pregnant so it shouldn't cause a problem in your case, so no need to tell anyone until you want to.

Whereas if you were already pregnant when accepting the job, and you knew it, it's really not fair on your employer if you're not upfront about it. Some places won't mind but smaller shops and independants (like us) can't afford to take people on, train them up and then have them just leave in a few months.

Putting away my business owner hat now having said that, I probably wouldn't say anything either, if it were me in this situation - and I have entertained the idea of going to work at a supermarket part time just to get the maternity benefits as we're going to start trying soon. But they're big, they can afford it

I wouldn't say anything right now. You are only 3 weeks and really most do not even know yet that the are preggers. I think you should tell them at the 12 weeks though. Good Luck hun!

Min wage for ur age can be less than £4 a hour n altho emplyers shouldnt they might be put off that ur pregnant and u do really need to tell them or u could be naughty and just wait till ur past 12 weeks so u will already have the job altho by law u dont have to tell employers ur pregnant till 15 weeks before due date but long before then i think they will guess as u get bigger lol

then u will have to go to jobcentre for ur maternity pay. I dont think u should walk 2 jobs cuz u will get so tired and it will put extra stress on u.

I'm nearly 12 weeks now, got my first scan on the 1st of September (13 weeks) and not even thought about telling work yet! I know I'll have to do it after the scan, but it will be hard because they're letting a few people go at the moment.
I'm 17 and also looking for another job to put a bit more money a side for LO. I'm on £5.52 an hour but only work 4-10 hours a week, sometimes non which isn't very convenient. I had an interview on Friday (for another part time job for now) and I didn't tell the interviewer I was pregnant, although I wanted to... I knew I wouldn't have a chance of getting the job. I'm handing my CV's around for a full time job too as I'm taking a year out from college to get a job and save more money.
As you're only 3 weeks, you've got loads of time to tell the people you end up working for, don't rush yourself. Although it is against the law, but if you tell the interviewer you're pregnant, there's a high chance you won't get the job (they'll think of another excuse not to employ you) but I'd leave it till 12 weeks if I was you and you can tell them you have either just found out or you wanted to wait till the scan to make sure everything's OK.
Good luck with the job search hun :)

I didn't say it was the same scenario, my point was even though I've worked there for a long time I didn't tell them until I was 12 weeks through personal choice. I certainly wouldn't have told them before 12 weeks if I'd just started and didn't even know them because it's extremely early days at 3 weeks.

You don't need to tell your employer that's you're pregnant at this stage. You may not have even known yourself so if I white lie would get you a job so you can provide for your child then do it. You need to be working for an employer for 26 weeks the 13th week before your baby is due (dont quote me on this, it's something like that) anyway so I dont see how it makes any difference whatsoever. x

I wouldnt tell them you were pregnant if i was you. You dont have to tell them at that stage so dont worry. Also you can work as many jobs as you choose to and you can earn as much as you like, there is no law! Minimum wage is just there so employers cant pay you any less, though i think most basic jobs usually pay a little more than min wage.

If you dont have anything like college you could just work one job fulltime instead of 2 jobs part time. Its sometimes hard to find 2 different jobs part time that are different hours or days because you cant choose your own hours or days.

Good luck with the job search though.

Hi hun i wouldn't tell employers at an interveiw you don't have to it's early days.

Look for a full time job that states a wage e.g £5.50 an hour. That way you will earn more than if it states minimum wage.

I wouldn't tell anyone at the interview, its very early days at the moment. Good luck with the interview hope it goes well.

Personally I wouldnt. You arent legally obliged to tell until you state when you want to start your leave and recieve pay. (Double check that on Working Families website, but im sure thats the case..) xx

Hey hun.
Firstly congrats :)
Secondly no you dont have to tell them til your ready :) And you can work right up until the due date if you want to and then take maternity leave when the baby is born. They can't sack you for being pregnant! No matter how much time you have off they can't say anything because your pregnant. National Min Wage is £4.50 an hour aswell. That is a good idea to have two part time jobs :) Yes you are allowed to do this, you're allowed to work as many jobs as you want!! You just pay more tax the more jobs you have. So you will get taxed slightly more on the second job but I doubt it will be much as you will be part time. But yeah if you work 5 days a week it would be full time wage babe.
Good luck with the interviews
xxx
