How would you pronounce it?
What do you think of it?
Do you think it's more suited to a boy or girl?

thanks :flower:

I'd say its pronounced Shane. I like the look of it written down for a girl but then when its spoken it sounds like the boys name shane..

Yeah I thought "Shane" when I saw it.....

I suppose this spelling would work better for a girl :) But I think Shane is a pretty much unisex name....

It could possibly be pronounced "Shay-nee"? <--- Deffo feminine :)

Nice name :flow:

Ooh I like Shay-nee! :D Sounds cute! x

The way i was thinking was a hard "ch", chey-knee.
I like shay-nee as well now.....hmmmm.
Cheyne is a proper name firstly (don't want anything made up lol) and secondly the name of the street that not only hubby and I met on but that he also proposed to me on as well.
Do you think it's important that we pronounce it how the street is pronounced? (chey-knee)
Street is cheyne walk in chelsea if anyones interested lol, no bad rep there. If anything quite famous, is that good or bad?

Was thinking for a boy - Cheyne Fletcher?

Cheyne Fletcher is gorg. Sounds like he could be famous! :D I think should be pronounced Chey-Knee for a boy and Shay-Knee for girl. Its nice you've chosen a name that means alot to you both :D

At first glance I would have said "chey-n" but then when I read it again I thought "chey-knee".
It's not a name i've heard of really before, but I would think of it as a boys name.

It's probably not a name I would pick myself (just because I've not really heard it/considered it) but I really like the fact that it is a meaningful name to you - I would pronounce it the same was as the street name, but I don't think it's important that you do, it would always have the connection for you iykwim?

I thought it was chey-knee but i actually really like it x

1st glance it reads " shane " to me , but for a girl i like cheyenne/cheyenna pronounced shay-enn or shayenna if ya get me.

Sorry but i dont like shaynee :(

My daughters name is Shani, pronounced Shay-nee,. Everyone says they like it as its quite unusual. xx

"Shane" and I don't like the name with either spelling I'm afraid!

:D Cheyne is my surname - it's Scottish, derived from the French for oak tree. In Scotland it's usually (but not always) pronounced "Cheen"; in Glasgow it's pronounced "Chain", and that's how my family says it. Though in London, as someone already said, Cheyne Walk is Chain-ee.

Have to say, I don't actually like it and although am not married, I didn't give it to my son, he's taken his dad's surname. I have always hated having to spell it out. And having people mis-pronounce it - I have had Chain-ee, Chine (to rhyme with swine), Shane, Shay-nee, Shy-ann, Shine... as a child and teen it embarrassed me to have a name that wasn't "known" (my family is from Scotland where the name is not uncommon, but I was brought up in the northeast of England, where it is unheard of).

So, yes, basically I'd never give it to a child. I'd think it's more of a masculine name than a feminine one, though.

First Glance: Chain/Shane
Second Thoughts: Chay- n , Shay-nay

I thought it was pronounced Shane... but i do really like the sound of "Chain - knee" and i think Cheyne Fletcher is a great name for a boy! Plus i love that it has a special meaning for you & your OH. That being said - one of the criteria that i consider when thinking of names is that i want something that wont be mispronounced constantly and that i wont have to always correct (like i have to do with my name - Tamara). Maybe you can use it as a middle name??

(FYI: The former US vice president's name is Dick Cheney - pronounced "Chain - knee")

Now i always thought shani was pronounced sharni lol

You're not alone a lot of people make that mistake:wacko:.

I guess we all do it though, We look at a name & assume its pronounced a certain way or pronounce how it looks. A lot of names are mispronounced these days & there simple ones lol
Guess it varies where you come from too x

Maybe since it's the name of a popular street near you, then everyone there will know how to pronounce it? Maybe take a survey of your friends, family, co-workers.... write the name down and see how they pronounce it! Just an idea!
