Hi Ladies,

Is anyone on orlistat and trying to concieve? the doctor has given it to me to help my weight loss... but im worried about taking it in case i fall pregnant (We are trying)...

Thanks in advance x

i dont have any info for you sorry i didnt want to read and run but ive never heard of that :dust:

I've never heard of it but you should ask your doctor will it hurt a potential pregnancy?

I'll look it up for you:

FDA pregnancy category B. This medication is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Taking orlistat can make it harder for your body to absorb certain vitamins. These vitamins are important if you are nursing a baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

orlistat has bad side effects... leaking is a common complaint because if you eat any fat it helps prevent absorption and it can leak out..... Its also not contraindicated in pregnancy "High-dose animal studies have failed to reveal evidence of embryotoxicity or teratogenicity".

Oh wow. So the site I was just on is misleading. How wonderful. *smh*

Thank you for putting this info up, hun.

does that mean its ok hun? ive used before so ok with the oil thingy... xx

fertile: No it saying that it has not been shown, but then it says there are no studies in pregnant woman, so its really unknown. I forgot the not first then I went back and added it in, lol :) I personally would not take anything during pregnancy that inhibits fat absorption or absorption of anykind.

Thank you mobaby... my gut feeling is not to take it.. cus it takes all yr vitamins etc.. which i would need for baby... i think im going to do old fashion healthy eating just in case xxx

Ohhh alrighty lol. But yea, I agree. It's like depriving your baby from the nutrition its supposed to get then.

To the OP, definitely let your doctor you're TTC and to put you on something else if that's possible. :)

Its "should" be okay. Its classified as cat B which means no studies are for it or against it but in lab rats its shown to be "safe". basically. Its not Cat c or x which you would not want to take at all. I think its a personal decision based on that info.

I don't know from a clinical standpoint but from what I know, dieting of any kind is bad when pg. I assume that means diet pills like orlistat. Plus I know there are some nasty side effects if you don't follow the diet well.

i think if im taking vitamins... it will deprive me of them.. i would hate to fall pregnant and be lacking the correct stuff.. especially if it stops my folic acid in any way xxxx

I suggest just eating in moderation. When you do get pregnant you're gonna end up eating a lot anyway, but just eat healthy, that's all you can really do. No diet is good during pregnancy unless it's something from a nutritionist and in that sense it isn't even a diet, it's just the nutritionist giving you a list of what to cut out and what to consume more of. I think you're fine, just tell your doctor you're gonna take the natural approach cuz you're TTC and you don't want anything going wrong, God forbid.

Yea, I don't blame you.

I have irritable bowel syndrome and I've been taking Librax pills for about 3 years. It's classified D which is the worst. It can cause a miscarriage and birth defects if you take it while you're pregnant. When I got pregnant in 2009 I didn't know it was classified D cuz my gastro told me it was safe to take and cuz pregnant women have been on it before so I didn't think anything of it. I had no clue I was even pregnant cuz I was already bleeding like AF when I got 2 positives. I still think my miscarriage was caused from the pills. I told my gastro I was pregnant and I miscarried and he felt like crap. He said "I'm sorry, I just thought it was safe since I know pregnant women who are on it." Of course I couldn't point a finger at him cuz it isn't proven and I can't blame myself for it (I have before though cuz I felt like I should've just known better even though that was pretty impossible), but it just sucks knowing that I took something that may have caused a miscarriage. So now I'm overly-cautious with everything. If you have a bad feeling about taking something, simply don't cuz that's your inner voice telling you it's not gonna end good. Listen to your heart and not what your doctor says. I'm glad you chose not to take them. :)
