other than oatmeal what else can help milk supply

Drink lots of water. Dehydration can negatively affect supply.

Malt; those non-alcoholic malt drinks like supermalt, moussy etc and also malt loaf. Fennel tea is good as well, if you make a cup with 6 teabags of it andadd a litre of iced water to it, it works wonders

fenugreek, motilium, and lots of pumping helped me

I think a really overlooked aspect is making sure your latch is as good as can possibly be.

I know we go on and on and on about it... but a shallow latch can really reduce milk transfer.

Also avoid using a bottle to give top ups. There is a real danger that baby will develop flow preference which will result in a drop in milk supply for mum. (Explanation: Milk comes from the breast in seperate let downs, normally 3-4 let downs per feed. A baby used to fast flow will tend to come off the breast when the milk flow slows between let downs. If the baby does not suckle to the third and fourth let down, the mum's breasts are never completely emptied so she gets the signal to make less milk)

Instead, if supplements are needed, an at-breast supplementer - SNS or Lact Aid (the better one is normally a Lact-Aid) will actually increase milk supply by increasing nipple stimulation.

My doctor told me garlic, I know most people thinks it affects babies negatively giving them gas, but I eat tons and it hasn't affected Autumn. (chocolate on the other hand... lol)

Also... I had supply issues and got put on domperidone to increase supply as I had to temporarily supplement and it broke my heart. (Though she will try and pull from the bottle to get to the boob, not all babies find the bottle better.)
Anyway, I think what it really was for me was calorie intake. After having Autumn I only really ate supper as OH cooked for me, I ate almost nothing in the day and lost a lot of weight. Since I started eating regulary again I've got tons of milk for her and I swear thats it, as I had to come off the dom rather quickly due to holidays and running out and it did not affect my milk at all.
The HV was always asking me if my appetite was ok and I'd say yes cause I thought eating when I was hungry meant I was ok... but hey I was tired.... I get it now. lol

fenugreek and milk thistle extract

watermelon and pineapple! asparagus and alfa alfa

I also read somewhere that drinking too much water can negativly affect your supply....so I suppose it's finding the amount that is right for you....just drink when you are thirsty

I've had really good results with domperidone. I'm lucky enough to have a lovely gp who has prescribed it for me.

wow thx for the advice here. Ive been giving my LO a top up bottle cos she just keeps falling asleep after 5 mins no matter how many times I wake her up.She falls asleep on my breast without getting a proper feed so then wakes up after 10 mins and Im afraid that maybe she isnt getting enough to eat.My milk was slow coming in due to complications after the birth and Im really interested in anything that will help my supply.

I took blessed thistle and fenugreek in capsule format and it did the trick for me. I now eat a big bowl of oatmeal everyday to keep my milk production up as I have to pump a few times a day to get enough milk for a topup bottle (Clara has slow weight gain and the pediatrician recommended this) as well as to mix with her cereal as she has a milk protein intolerance so I can't use the cereals that are just add water.

Hope I don't get blasted for saying this, but you know the old wives' tale about having a beer to get your milk to let down? Well, they used to serve Guinness in hospitals for a reason! It has a really dramatic effect on me. I think it's all the hops and malt and everything else, but if I have a Guinness, I'm gushing very shortly after.
Guinness is quite low alcohol (4.5%), so you don't have long to wait before popping baby back on the boob.
Some people prefer not to drink at all during BFing, so your call, but it worked for me.

I havent heard of this but if it works Im willing to try lol

I started drinking Mothers Milk tea and its worked wonderfully!

Is that the one by Traditional Medicinals?
I loved that one!
They don't sell that particular one in Canada, so I always load up on it when I visit the US.

Hi!
Didn't want to read and run; plenty of very good advice here, although i would ask why you don't think that you have enough supply? If you feel that you have to 'top up' the baby, there are other things you can do to help your supply,
i) latch the baby on as much as you can... it may seem to be a lot in the first 24/48 hrs, but the body will naturally respond to the request for more milk and up your supply.....
ii) try taking a warm shower before feeding - putting lots of hot water on your (.)(.)... this will help the let down of the milk.

Both of these worked for me!

Take care,

Purple

I had to go look at the box to see exactly what brand it was, but yes - it is Traditional Medicinals. I need to go buy some more cause I only have one bag left. I bet you could get it online from GNC maybe?

The only downside of the tea is that I seem to get major heartburn from it. Which is odd I think - but I don't know what else could be causing it. I am only getting it on the days I drink the tea....

I think I am going to have to order a Guiness myself next time I'm at the bar...

This worked for me too, I drank Weissbier (also a very porridgy, malty sort of beer) a few times in the early days and it def increased my supply.

Lots of rest and water, make sure you're eating enough calories.

Raspberry leaf or fennel tea, Fenugreek, Blessed Thistle, oatmeal, pumping between feeds.
