It really depends. A Toronto fertility doc, Dr. Hannam, says the average age that a woman will not be able to sustain a pregnancy is 42, but it is just an average. Some women can't even if they are younger and some women can even when older. My own great-Grandmother had my Grandfather at 45. So your relative has every reason to try. If it does not happen within a few months she should get a referral to a fertility doc right away, every month counts at that age and there are interventions they can use like IVF. I hope she has good luck.
Like above... it truly varies per situation. Some 20 yr old women have issues and some 40yr old woman do not... I'm 37 and needed fertility help. But it worked!!!!
I'm 42, will be 43 in about a month. I didn't have any interventions or treatments. There are ladies in the ttc over 35 forum that have tried different things and some of them are/have gotten pregnant as well. You might also ask in there. There is at least one woman on this board who gave birth in the last couple of months to a healthy full term baby at 47.
I'm 43, was about to start IVF (which meant all pre-existing problems were resolved, e.g. underactive thyroid, lost weight, etc) and got pregnant naturally. I am now 12+4 and preliminary screening shows my pregnancy is low-risk, baby seems ok, etc., so, absolutely your 40 yr should try! (but get everything checked out blood tests, etc.)
