Okay, so I am very new at TTC. I have been off bc since January. And just allowing things to get back into the "swing of things". I understand the basic physical symptoms of ovulating. Yet I am not to sure how to figure out my days of ovulation yet. I'm a little confused I guess, because I feel like I am having "symptoms" of my body adjusting to being off of bc. My last two cycles were 40 days and then 39.
The question is - considering I have such a long cycle... how can i find out what days I am ovulating? I just finished a cycle and would like to try again this month. I thought about buying a thermometer - but I noticed whenever I get my temp check its normally around 99 - does that change anything?

I would definitely invest in a basal body thermometer - your waking temperature is completely different than your normal average temperature. My average temperature is about 97.7 to 98.2 whereas my BBT is anywhere from 96.1 to 98.2. Regardless of what the temperatures actually are, the pattern they create if you take it consistently, will clearly identify when you've ovulated. The downside to BBT is that it only tells you *after* you've ovulated so it's best to pair it with OPKs, cervical fluid monitoring, or cervical position monitoring if you want to actively TTC. If you do go the BBT route, make sure you buy a basal body thermometer, not a standard thermometer.

It's my understanding that ovulation is typically 12-16 days before the start of your next period so you're probably ovulating somewhere between CD20 and CD28.

:dust: to you!

I agree with above, and I would definitely get some ovulation sticks online. You can get like 40 for $10 or something like that. I get the wondfo or one step ones from amazon and check a couple times a day when I think I am getting close to ovulation. :)

I had no idea what a basal body temperature was to be honest. lol.

I didn't either until I started reading more about TTC. If you sign up for FertilityFriend.com you can take their 20ish lesson tutorial to learn more. You get a 30 day trial for free and then free limited access after that point or you can join for a fee. I ordered a book called Taking Charge Of Your Fertility and though it's huge size was initially daunting, it was a fast read and amazingly interesting to learn so much about my cycle. They definitely don't teach anything even close to it in sex-ed!

I also have long cycles (but never consistent in length). This is my second cycle of charting my basal body temp, and I just started check my cervical mucus a few days ago. I don't think I will ever do the OPK because (1) So far I've seen the ovulation dip before the rise in temp on my chart, so that gives me a good day to bd, (2) If I let myself go all out with this, I will get obsessed and stressed about it, and (3) Any $$$ I save by not buying OPKs can be spent on my beautiful little baby whenever I am blessed with it!

It could take up to like 8 cycles before they are normal after going off of birth control, keep that in mind as well! I went off birth control July 2010, and only seen AF 4 times since then! I was never regular before though...

Very true about going off birth control. I'm fortunate so far that my last 2 cycles were although long... but they still came. (Never thought I'd be happy to see AF!!). I was relieved to find out I am ovulating. I'm still holding out hope that I won't see AF next month because of a BFP. However I know things can take time. And although I have my 'off' days when I am a bit of pessimist. I still try to just keep on the bright side of things and enjoy the journey.:happydance:

Hi, I'm new here, but just wanted to let you know you're not alone with the ovulation thing. My husband and I have been trying since Last July, or maybe prior to the last 3-4 months NOT not trying, if you understand, and then switched to very actively watching and trying since December or so. I figured just keeping track of my monthly AF's that I'd know when I was ovulating just using the online calculators, etc. Well that didn't work and recently my cycle this month was only 3 days...so anyways, got off track, sorry. I bought a OPK and not ONE time did it ever come up positive. So I'm just at a loss here now. I only bought the generic 7 day kit however, I am not sure if I just never ovulated, didn't catch it in time, or didn't test the right way. After reading all the wonderful and informative posts on here before I signed up, I had no idea to test twice a day, and the entire month. So now I'm here trying to figure out the best kit to buy for this - any specific suggestions? And you told her about the Basal thermometer - when do you suggest starting to use that if you've never before and also what kind to buy? Do I start the 1st day of my next AF? thanks - and best of luck to you and I hope you get your BFP!

I bought these OPKs from Amazon - they're dirt cheap and work pretty well. A lot of people mention on here about digital ones with a smiley face (Clear Blue Digital Smileys) but they're more expensive. You don't have to test twice per day for the entire length of your cycle but you do want to test twice per day during the time you should be most fertile. For example, my average cycle is 29 days so I "should" ovulate on CD15 since the average Luteal Phase length is 14 days. Since it can be anywhere from 10-16 days, I would start using OPKs on CD12 twice per day until I see positive results.

As for charting your Basal Body Temperature -
I bought this one since it had decent reviews. You can sign up with FertilityFriend.com to take their online charting course which can instruct you on how best to chart but basically, you need to keep the thermometer right by your bed and the instant you wake up, you take your temp either orally or vaginally. (I do orally) You need to take the temp before you roll over, get up, walk around, etc. There's actually a pattern to your BBT which will show you when ovulation occurs. You also have to make sure to take your temperature at the same time every day. Even a 30 minute difference can affect your temperature. If you have only one temp that's not taken at the right time of day, you'll still see the pattern but if you take it at different times every day, it won't be very accurate. During your period, your temps are elevated a bit, then they come down a few tenths of a degree. On ovulation day, SOME people will experience a bigger dip in temperature (mine is about a half a degree) and the day after that, it rises (mine goes about a full degree higher). After ovulation your temperature will stay above the temperatures charted prior to ovulation (aka your "coverline"). If you have 18 days of temperatures above your coverline, you're pregnant. You can still test at 12-14 DPO if you want but it's not necessary since your temps will tell you everything you need to know. My temp last month started falling at 9-12DPO so I knew to expect AF within the next few days. Some people will experience an additional rise in temperature after implantation occurs (usually around 5-7DPO) so that's another sign that you're pregnant and would be noticed well before you could take a HPT.

Here's my chart from last month which shows you the temps before and after ovulation.

The dotted crossbar points out ovulation. The blue dot not connected is a "discarded" temperature. I was travelling that day, woke up in a hotel, and panicked about where I was so my temp was WAY higher than normal. Then I didn't get to temp on CD12 because my OH knocked my thermometer off the night stand and it wouldn't have been an accurate temp if I got up to go get it. You can also see the dip and rise in temps. I experienced it twice last month which in my case I believe may have been because I ovulated twice. Fraternal twins are very common in my family so it's possible. If I had used OPKs on CD12 and CD15, I would have a better idea but it was my first month off birth control and was still waiting for the OPKs to arrive in the mail!

You can learn all of this and more in the book Taking Charge Of Your Fertility and probably go through most of it in the FertilityFriend online lessons. I didn't complete them so I don't know for sure about that one though. :)

Hope this helps!
