Hiya girls

anyone found an easy to do weight loss plan for pcos that works well?

at the mo I'm seeing low carb/atkins, but last time I managed 5 days before I was either going to kill someone else, or myself!

anyone tried low GI?

I have so much to lose, and so little time to do it. I need to be under 30 bmi by March to persuede them that I should be able to have the ovarian drilling, which is 26.25 in 8.5 weeks :o

Hi Hun

I tried low Gi last year and it worked really well and helped my cycles, are yo on metformin as that helps as well.

Im currently on weightwatchers and lost 12lbs in about 4 weeks.

Hope that helps.

Sarah

yeah, been on met since the summer, but it doesnt help, nor does the clomid :(

what changes did you make for the low GI? was it mainly the group support that made ya go to weight watchers?

basically cutting out high gi food so I started eating things like brown basmati rice and wholegrain pasta's and bread, potatoes and white bread are a no no. More fruit and veg and no processed food. There is a PCOS diet book which is quite good and low Gi.

I like the ww plan and it also helps me to have the 'fear' of being weighed!!

just had a look and all the ones in my area are too early in the evening :(

Hiya, I am one of the very lucky PCOS'ers who are slim, although if I put on weight it will go straight round my middle.

I have a few PCOS books, and they all recommend a low gi diet. When I was struggling to conceive ds I really through myself into loosing those extra few pounds and it drove me mental. In the ironically I had to try to put some weight back on incase I lost too much lol!!

Anyway - I have found to change my eating habits, I have to really want to do it in my mind first, its only ever worked when Im mentally prepared.

Do you actually eat crap? I dont mean to sound rude there lol - what I mean is, do you struggle to loose weight if you stick to an exact diet?

Again, Ive heard great things about Metformin and weight loss - I have it, and if I eat too much fatty food I have to run to the loo - its enough to put you off the bad foods!!

So I have heard low gi is best - stabilising blood sugars/insulin, and eating 3 meals a day and snacks in between. Im still sneaking in naughties, but am gradually trying to wean myself off chocolate!!

Good luck - I know its not easy, although Im lucky to not have to loose too much, but I do know how hard it is to get yourself in that place mentally to do all the changes. :hugs:

Sorry, just saw you are on metformin already. Have you asked about maybe upping the dose to see if that works?

hi what was it about the atkins you did not like, i doing vlcd but think i should do atkins as at least i could eat something. good luck you can do ww online ;)

I was also going to suggest WW online??

Imogen, I have heard (and my personal experience) that atkins doesnt work well for people with PCOS, or should i say is more difficult. By having no carbs it makes the fact that your body cant control your blood sugar even worse so you are likely to get the side effects of atkins even worse. I would also assume that this could have a negative impact on your cycles as controlling your blood sugar with a low Gi diet helps regulate them.

hope you don't mind me popping in, i'm also a pcos suffer, i have found for me too lose weight, i was successful in combining low gi foods with the ww online, and also with regular exercise :D

i didn't no they did the books though, thank you for that, and lots of luck ladies :hugs: xx

ww online: I could do, but it's the regular meetings side that I was really after. obviously they assume all people who need WW dont have to work ;)

Low carb/atkins: because I didnt like eggs, all I could really have was meat/fish/chicken, and after a few days I was just so miserable, especially making DH dinner and knowing I couldnt have most of it. I couldn't do it again.

eating crap: yup, my eating habits are awful, have been since I was about 3 years old when I started developing food aversions. I've been working on that all my adult life, and am slowly getting better. I still eat far too much chocolate/ice cream/bakery type stuff and alot of white carbohydrates. This all needs to change. On a strict diet, I will lose 3-4lbs a week, but it comes back really quick :(

Dont ww now have like a thing about emotional eating etc.
I am a BIG emotional eater - will head to the cupboard for comfort, excitment, celebrations, depression, boredom - every emotion going! We now have hardly any treats left in the house and Im refusing to replace them as I genuinely cant help myself if they are there and I think about it!

I think ww is also online if that would help? There are also free sites like sparkpeople.com that have food diaries and calorie counters etc.

What is working for me, is just simply trying to really cut down on the amount of sweets, chocs, heavy calorie drinks, chips, burgers, hot dogs etc. If I cut those out then the rest of my diet is fine, its just I add in the bad snacks - thats where I go wrong. So I dont really plan what meal or lunch to have, as long as it isnt a burger or huge baguette etc. then I know its safe to pick that meal. Then I have to work hard not to go for bad snacks in the evenings!

I did have a book about the emotional and psychological eating, maybe something like that would help?

Hope you find a plan that works at loosing and then keeping it off :hugs:

did anyone see the paul mckenna thingy on tv last night? he reckons that he can reduce cravings for food things by 'reprogramming' the brain... I'm still a bit skeptical, but must admit I've found it easier to avoid chocolate today, so who knows?

proper weigh in tomorrow morning, so fingers crossed

Oh no I missed that - would have liked to have seen that! I do believe that most of my bad habits are from childhood - the gradparents 'treating' me to chocolate every time I saw them, parents cooking comfort junk food when I felt down etc.
Im trying really hard to try to not do this with ds but its quite hard, a hard habit to break!

Im so going to have to change my name on here soon, thats not helping me to stick to avoiding chocolate!!

I have random days too where I dont feel that urge for chocolate, but other days where I just have to have it. Saying that, since eating breakfast and having regular snacks, Ive not had those urges so maybe my blood sugar levels are much better for avoiding the sugary snacks.

Just got to wean myself off the wine now - have been indulging in the last week seeing as I avoided it for 13 weeks!

weirdly, alcohol I can take or leave, its chocolate/puddings I love!

2lbs down this week, I know I can do better though

how are you getting on sweets? when's your weigh-in day?

next tuesday, not been a great week so far so not looking forward to it!!

Hiya,

I have PCOS and have been told to lose some weight before they can do anything to help me but they have prescribed me Metformin. I actually lost more weight before the Metformin than afterwards so its not doing much for my weightloss really but then from what I understood from my gynecologist its not supposed to be a "weightloss wonder drug" and isn't prescribed for that purpose?

I've tried Low GI and that just didn't work for me because i'm a very picky eater with many food aversions and don't like many of the low GI foods  I've never tried WW either as there isn't a group local enough to me to consider it.

At the moment i'm just trying to generally exercise well and eat in moderation - i.e. less fatty foods and more vegetables and rice lol. I'm under a dietician and she basically just told me to opt for low GI foods where its possible and to look for lower fat alternatives to the foods I regularly eat - whether its healthier cooking or healthier purchasing. I.e. buy lower fat chips and steam chicken instead of frying it etc

I lost 19lbs since 6th September by using that method, but I have stayed the same since end November :( Have to admit that I ate more unhealthily over christmas though so hopefully will be back on track now!
