Hi Ladies,

Could really do with some help/advise.

I was diagnosed with PCOS yesterday after trying for baby number 2 for a year with no luck. Since June last year, my periods have gone completely out of whack with 6 -12 weeks between each period. I had some blood tests done and I saw my GP yesterday who said I have it based on the blood test results and the irregular cycles. My thyroid also come back borderline. I was also tested for diabetes but that was fine. My result was 4.4.

I have no other symptoms of PCOS whatsoever.

She has prescribed me metformin for a month to see how I get on with it. I am really worried about taking it through as I know the side effects can be awful. I would much prefer clomid, but she said she cannot prescribe that and I would need to be referred to a specialist. I have agreed to give the metformin a go and if no luck or if I cannot stomach it, she will refer me. I am also getting my thyroid levels checked again next month to see if my borderline results were a one off or not.

I am not convinced metformin is going to be right for me & I am worried about making myself sick for nothing.

Can anyone share their experience? Is it as bad as they say in terms of side effects? Is metformin likely to help me ovulate and regulate my cycles even though I am not diabetic? Any success stories out there?

I think you ought to give it a try. I took it and at first it just gave me diarrhea. That was it though it's really not that bad and that side effect did ware off.

Thanks for this :) I see you're pregnant, congratulations ! Is that a result of metformin do you think? Were you having trouble before?

I have PCOS and take metformin. That and Clomid got me DS. I take metformin because I am insulin resistant, that is a common thing with PCOS and can often prevent ovulation.

I don't think it would hurt anything to try it. But I would start slow. I started eith 500 mg for several days and then went up to the full dose. I think it took about y 3 weeks. That will help with the side effects.

I take metformin. The first week sucked because you're body has to get use to it and it causes bad stomach aches, but once that's over it's great. Since starting I have suffered less pains due to cysts and my periods have become more regular. Its worth taking even if you wind up going to a specialist. Its not meant to get you pregnant it's meant to steady your hormones to better your over all health when you have PCOS. Though I have meet a few women who have gotten their sticky bean after taking it for a little while.

I'm on metformin, my cycles used to be 45-60+ plus days, now it's 31-34. Not pregnant yet but feel I have a chance now. Have been told to wait it out for 6 months before adding clomid to the mix.
Side effects were a bad tummy/ diarrhea but that didn't last too long. Now I'm fine but quite regular which I take as a good thing anyway. I use opk's and used to get dark lines all the time, now I get faint lines until ov time and then I get two days of dark lines, so I think it's helping me hormone wise.

Worth a try amd hope it helps you xx

Look up the benefits of cinnamon and raw honey (together and separate) for PCOS

My husband and I struggled to get pregnant for six years. Diagnosis was unexplained infertility. We finally got pregnant after 4 IVFs and using donor embryos. After my son, I went to a weight loss clinic and was put on metformin for "metabolic syndrome" ( high tryglercides, low HDL, borderline glucose, etc). I started at 500 mg daily and tolerated it fine. During that time I ended up with a chemical pregnancy, which is more than we ever accomplished on our own. I've never been diagnosed with PCOS, and had always had regular cycles, but I did some research on metformin, insulin resistance and the role in fertilization and implantation. So I asked my PCP to humor me and increase my dose to 1500 mg and in 3 months TaDa!!! Pregnant on our own!!!! Can you believe that?! After 6 years, countless IUIs and 4 IVFs!!! I am a strong believer in metformin and its role in infertility (and Gods perfect timing of course!). Side effects were minimal aside from some occasion, mild diarrhea. Now NTNP for #3 and on 2000 mg daily. FX for you! Keep us posted!

Thanks ladies!

Some good experiences and success stories. Think I'll give it a go when back from hols. I have been using OPK's this month and the lines got darker for a day or two, but not as dark as the control line. It makes me think I am not ovulating at all :( I feel really worried about it, so just have to give it a go I think.

I haven't been temping. I don't really get it to be honest. Do you have to do it the exact same time everyday?

What is soy iso?

Yes you do. You take it at the same time everyday before you do anything...talk, get out of bed, etc. Click on my ovulation chart in my signature and sign up for fertility friend! It's great for charting temps and other fertility signs!

Soy isoflavones...they're a supplement when dosed and taken at the right time in your cycle, can act like Clomid to assist in ovulation
