Can anyone help me?

I'm off for blood tests tomorrow, doc seems to be looking for signs of PCOS she is doing cholesterol tests amongst all the other hormone ones. Can you develop pcos or is it something you either have or don't have?

Thanks

Allie

I'm not sure. .. do you mean are you born with it?I've no idea.

Not heard of cholesterol being linked to pcos. For a diagnosis they normally look for any 3 of the following symptoms:

insulin resistance
High testosterone
excess hair
overweight
irregular cycles
infrequent/no ovulation
cysts on your ovaries confirmed with scan (10 or more I think)

I had cysts, irregular cycles and no ovulation. None of the other symptoms thankfully as think hormone and insulin issues are more tricky to treat.
hope that helps.

I'm wondering about this too. We conceived our son in April of 2011, and I was just diagnosed at the end of September for polycystic ovaries, but my doctor doesn't think this should affect my fertility since it only took us 3 months to conceive our son. Is this something I had even when we conceived our son?? I don't have irregular periods and I'm pretty sure I ovulate on a monthly basis, so all of this is still all new and scary to me. Of course now I'm petrified that all of a sudden I won't ovulate every month. Google is bad!

Hey, thanks for the helpful reply. I guess what I was wondering is that a few years ago, I had the usual tests done for fertility reasons and there was defo no mention or sign of PCOS then but now it seems that's what they are suspecting. I didn't know if it was possible for there to be no trace of it but then a few years down the line, develop it. My only difference since then is I'm overweight now as opposed to then. The only two things I have from that list are being overweight and missing periods. What strikes me as odd though is that at my heaviest my periods were normal but after losing two and a half stone, they've now gone wonky :S I guess I will have to wait for my blood results and the scan to see what's going on. As for the cholesterol, I'd never heard of it before either, it's something to do with having too much of the bad type of cholesterol and reduced levels of the good kind apparently. Thanks again :)

Have you guys seen this website? https://sites.google.com/site/miscarriageresearch/hormones-and-miscarriage/pcos
It may be geared towards m/c but they really link many studies about PCOS that have nothing to do with m/c and all about infertility.

PCOS women do best on high protein/veg, low carb, low sugar diet. They will often lose weight and get their cycles back/get pregnant by simply changing diets.
