Pillows for Newborns???

NB on the divider front I heard the safebbay sleeper was one of the best ones and they retail around £25?

Thank you. I am going to look into how practical and safe it will be to use a divider over the sleepcurve mattress topper. I guess once baby graduates from a swaddle into a sleeping bag, the cot divider will be no longer needed anyway.

As for using a pillow...looks like it is rare for anyone to use on in the UK!!! I wouldn't be keen on one myself, but find it interesting it is recommended in other countries.

Thanks for your replies.

my friends baby developed a flat head, (regardless of how they position her she always favors the one side) and the doctors gave her a helmet to wear while she sleeps which has helped tons.

I wouldn't use a pillow though - I'd rather have a baby with a flat head than risk worse with a pillow... that mattress looks good though!

I was debating on buying one of these https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3532543...it's suppose to stop the whole flathead syndrome, but I spoke to my Dr. and he says the Flat head syndrome..is and I quote "a load of crap" ..he says you don't need a special pillow or anything..and that babies who do happen to suffer from that..are most of the time babies that are neglected and kept laying down all day..He said that it's pretty hard for your baby to get it seeing that you'll be cradling it, and spending tummy time with them way too much for them to get that, plus naturally after a while baby learns to turn their head sideways while sleeping

Well I have asked my mom who had 5 kids, my sister who had 5 kids and my sil who just had a baby and they say flat head is not going to happen if you encourage "tummy time" (I am para phrasing as obviously the tummy time phrase is relatively new) All books and things say to encourage the baby to play on their tummy for a bit every day. So long as you dont have the baby laying flat a lot (sadly some parents just leave the baby laying all day) then flat head will most likely not happen.

About the pillows, those ones on that site are very dangerous for smothering baby. The mattress... too expensive for me personally but I was thinking of this https://www.bumpto3.com/sleep/Sleep_accessories/love_nest til my family has said I will not need it if I encourage the babys play time and things. This pillow is good because unlike the others on that site you posted, they are not fluffy and could not smother the baby in any way.

Ive never heard of a pillow for newborns, nor would i use one. The babies wont get flat head if you alternate what side they sleep on, and once their a bit older they will move their head themselves anyways.

Thats totally what Id say x
As for this sleep curve thing Ifind i hard to believe that if it was as really good as they make it out to be, why do neonatal units not have them, as preemies struggle to breathe without assistance?

yup i agree with the doctor I said exactly the same thing...it think its common sence really...

again I 100% agree

I wouldnt give a newborn a pillow, but i gave amber 1 from when she was around 6 months. From ikea. Put it under the sheet.

My mum has quite a flat head and she insists it's because her mum wasn't careful. Both boogalu's grandmother's will be all over the baby in terms of flathead so I bought one of these:

I doubt I'll use it overnight but throughout the day when baby is sleeping I probably will. Not only does it apparently prevent flat head but it also prevents nan and gran obsessing over flathead.

I used this one for my baby, as she constantly moved back to the same head position, it worked brilliantly

This is what I have too... worth a go!

I saw the "sleep curve" mattresses at the baby show (and spoke to the inventor) and they seem like an excellent idea, but HUGELY expensive for a piece of very plain, shaped foam...

I plan to use it overnight, but will have to play it by ear...

Sorry but some of the post on here have made me quite cross, if there is no such thing as flat head sydrome, and that it is a 'load of crap' why have i been sent with Robyn to see the physiotherapist, paediatrician and had xrays done!!!

There are conditions which alot of doctors are not aware of that will cause a flat head if not treated quickly!
Torticolosis - shortening of the neck muscles which causes the baby to pull the head constantly to one side, baby may not be able to move the head freely to each side.
A defect with how the plates in the head grow can cause flattening too

Robyn was checked by the physio, and she told me that the doctor was wrong to fob me off when i asked at the 6 week check that her head seemed wonky. She would have liked to have seen me there and then, so that Robyns Torticollsis could have been treated.

I was advised that a sleep curve mattress or a pillow would be fine, and would take some of the pressue from the side that she favoured.

The physio said that she is seeing anything up to 3 babys a week with plagiocehaly partly due to the back to sleep campain and the fact that babies are left in car seats, on play mats, and during sleeping.

Robyn still has one ear further forward than the other but it is quite mild to some of the kids.
