Thanks for that...ours do have longer pins and are almost impossible to remove (by us ), but I did find this the other day - hubby's attempt to take one out, which left the earth pin in the socket...

this has happened to me... twice!

we struggle to take them out of our plug sockets.

They need to beable to take them out before they can do that.

ah make sence when u think about it, so there more or less pointless! why are they sold :S:S

Interesting, ours aren't like that here. It's cool they have the shutters built in though. Ours don't have those but we don't really use outlet covers, I had them but as I took them in and out they have somehow disappeared haha we just teach them to stay away

Very scary.Thank you hun xxx

This must be an old video though coz legally our sockets have to have the switch on them now and have needed this for years.

I don't see how they are dangerous as most safety socket covers aren't as small as the ones demonstrated to leave a gap at the bottom anyway:dohh:

And who is gonna put em in upside down???? Derrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr:rofl:

Actually, my pal lives in a relatively new house (last 10-15 years) and none of her sockets have switches on them.

I promise you that it's a legal requirement as we needed all of ours changing when we moved in here 7 years ago.

Just coz it's a legal requirement obviously doesn't mean that everyone has them but they wouldn't show a video with illegal plugsockets would they?

For new buildings they need to have the switches on, but I don't think there's a requirement to replace sockets in older buildings. I think ours are probably safe for now as long as we take them out properly...don't think there's any chance of Sam being strong enough to get them out in the next 5 years! They also can't physically be put in upside down and don't snap if you try (I've been testing tonight  ...not sticking anything in though, obviously!)

[Edit...just seen your post above - had no idea. I'm sure there are people who have been in the same house for 30 years who still have the old ones?]

They might if people still have them in their homes.

I'm imagining you with a new permed look hairdo :rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Interesting thanks hun! The socket covers we have are so hard to remove theres only me in the house that can get them out and thats if ive got nails otherwise nochance lol.

The ones we have are great, they are practically impossible to remove unless you have another safety socket cover to remove it with. I couldn't find a picture but we bought them from Tesco as part of a babyproofing pack.

thanks for that i just looked up our socket covers they are the one of the worst!

I'm a Chartered Electrical Engineer and Qualified Electrician.

I can confirm there's no LEGAL requirement for sockets to be switched. The legal requirement - Plugs and Sockets (Safety) Regulations, is for sockets ordinarily intended for domestic use to comply with BS1363 - which specified outlets to have safety shutters.

The current Wiring Regulations, 17th Edition (BS7671: 2008) do require all sockets intended for domestic use in the UK to be shuttered - but this is only a safety standard, not a legal requirement. In addition, there's no legal requirement for a switch to "isolate" the socket to the current BS1363 standard for socket outlets, i.e. the requirement is as a minimum to disconnect the "line", not the "neutral".
