Polish Eating Swans

i think its like with a lot of other things, there is always a small minority that give others a bad name. for example a teenage boy in my area was murdered by a couple of polish men and unfortunately this is left people with a pretty bad opinion of polish in general. i dont think it helps when the only time they get mentioned on the news etc is when they do something wrong so thats all people hear about them. hope that makes sense.

That makes sense like its the same with chavs and other types of groups.

Spose where in a age where no one can ask questions without people getting offended god knows what the future is going to be like

I think (i might be wrong) that it was just the wording of the post that maybe offended people with the '.... mentioned that they eat them' implying all polish, I know it was maybe not meant that way but it can be difficult to understand exactly what someone is trying to say sometimes when it is just words on a screen

but then comments like the one above I highlighted also don't help the situation

Or it could be read that the swans eat the polish

Those offended could always report the post

Frankie- what was the question? I think the potentially offensive part of the OP was the "I don't mind the odd one or two" part; it sounds like you yourself have a low opinion of Polish people in general. If that's not true, I'll just say it was badly worded.

I asked if anyone had heard of it before? Mean come on you see 2 of them batting a defenceless bird over the head with a stick and what are you supposed to say?

'well done, here is your medal' Im sorry but they give every other one a bad name. Come to Lincoln and you will see for yourself on the banks of the River Witham or in Boston where the numbers are gradually dwindling.

I dont have a problem with them albeit the ones that do the above.

Iv heard the saying before although Iv never believed it to be true tbh!

Its illegal to eat swan for starters aren't they the Queens birds??

Nope, never heard of it before. I was curious so I googled "Polish swan recipes" and couldn't find any .

Remember though, when you see someone of a different ethnicity doing something you disapprove of, it's your choice whether or not to apply it to their entire group. That's how people end up justifying racism, and I didn't want to see this thread devolving into a full-on Pole bashing. Not by you necessarily, but there are thousands of people on this forum and it would be easy enough for one to take the topic and run with it.

Probably, I would imagine that since they're both birds that paddle around in ponds they'd taste similar? I dunno, I don't like duck either. lol

Its just one of those things i guess, i dont know much about it but if it is a part of their tradition then so be it, other countries eat dogs,cats. horses etc, we'd sit here and go YUCK yet to them they know no different and its normal

I'm sad to hear of anyone hurting a defenceless animal or bird, the poor thing. Swans mate for life too .

Swans are classed as the Queen's birds and it is illegal to harm or kill them. You can be fined £5000 or receive a 6 month prison sentance. Even stealing a swans egg carries the same penalties

I googled it to double check and it came up with a few reports like this including one of a man in Wales being jailed for killing one by either stabbing or biting it. He wasn't Polish.

There was also a report about yobs shooting swans for target practice and I remember a local case about a teenage boy in court for beating one to death and harming the cygnets, he put food down so they came close to him and then he beat them with a stick.

He wasn't Polish either, he was English.

I think you just get some evil people in every culture.

I have a copy of the original "The Joy of Cooking" book, and it has recipes for swan, opossum, raccoon, armadillo, all sorts of things. No thanks! lol

I gather that it's quite common for people in other areas to eat goose? That would be considered very strange here.
