I would like to make up some porridge using formula rather than water. Can anyone explain to me the easiest way to do this? I am a bit clueless about making up formula but would rather not use expressed milk due to wastage.

When I use water I just grind the oats and then cook for 10 minutes on the stove. If I use formula do I need to pre-boil the water each time and then wait for it to cool or can I just pre-boil a batch of water, then add the formula, then mix in the oats and heat? Also can I heat in the microwave rather than on the hob to save time?

You can premake formula and store for up to 24hrs. Simply make it up as if you were using it fresh, rapid cool in a bowl of cold water and pop it in the fridge. But if you are only using it once a day then this isn't of any benefit and would be better off making fresh each time - if that makes sense. Ideally the water needs to be no less than 70degrees to kill off the bacteria in the powder (hence boiling and leaving it no longer than 30mins) but if you are going to be using it straight away you can boil some water up and leave it on the side then add the powder and use immediately - the bacteria won't have time to multiply if you don't leave it. But again the water would only be good for one day.

What type of oats are you using? I use a specific baby porridge (cow and gate usually) and add the milk then heat in the microwave.

I am using just regular porridge oats which I grind to a powder in the food processor.

Ok then I'm not sure about microwaving them, I can't see why not though because you can buy ready brek etc which you can heat in the microwave.

I've just been using regular cows milk, should I not be? He doesn't eat much, we share my bowl.

Its fine to use regular cows milk we do, ideally it should be full fat but semi-skimmed is ok providing that it is only a small part of the dairy products you're giving to LO. To crazy diamond why not cook the porridge in water until it is very thick and then add the formula, I used to find this worked quite well.

After 6months it's fine to use cows milk to make cereals etc up xx
