Are they safe? I always thought you had to add the powder to hot water to kill any bacteria in the powder, but I'm reading that people pre boil water then take it out with them, adding the powder at feed time. This would be great if its ok, but is it actually ok to do this?

I think as long as the water is kept in a flask or likewise so the water doesn't cool too much it's ok. The water needs to be cooled for 20/30 mins so it is a safe temp to kill the bacteria.

The way I've heard it is that people actually put the water in the bottle, not a flask, then drop the pots into the water to release the powder, I know my friend used this method for her night feeds I'm just wary

I used a flask to take the water out and about (flask containing water that had been boiled then put into the flask after 30 mins). Then the pot containing the formula so I could measure the water and mix when lo needed a feed. If your water is pre-boiled and in a clean flask and your bottle and pot are sterilised then there's no reason at all that it should be unclean or unsafe, and it's much safer than taking a warm bottle out in a stay-warm bag.

We used the tommee tippee bottles and potshttps://www.boots.com/en/Tommee-Tippee-Closer-to-Nature-Milk-Powder-Dispensers_49910/

Unfortunately the water must be hot to kill any bacteria present in the powder.

WHO guidelines https://www.who.int/foodsafety/publications/micro/pif2007/en/

I find the pots great when we go out for the day or into town :winkwink:

I e just read the WHO guidelines and in the last section it says, if its not possible to access boiling water, then feeds can be made from safe sterile cooled water below 70 degrees but must be discarded immediately after use and not stored. So this would mean you could take out left to cool boiled water and add the formula to it?? I'm even more confused now!

Edit, not the guidelines in that link but the full PDF document

I've a friend who puts boiled water in bottles first thing, then uses the cold water bottles to make up with powder when needed, couldn't do it myself!

My LO takes his milk at room temp and that's how I make it. I usually measure 4x 6ozs feeds and let them cool in the bottle, then when James needs a feed I add the powder. I always throw away any left overs x

We used the pots and we boiled water and stored it (cool) in bottles in advance and LO was always fine, but having read more since then I wouldn't do it that way again.

If you want to make feeds fresh when out and about, could you keep a flask of hot water, use a couple of ounces to dissolve the formula then top up the rest of the bottle with cooled boiled water to make it drinking temp? It would mean carrying around a spare bottle to measure the right amount of hot and then cold water but I think it'd be worth it for the peace of mind.

I do this. My homemade version of the Tommee Tippee prep machine! I put 60ml of the hot water in one bottle and have about 150ml of cool boiled in another bottle.

When the time comes I add the formula to the hot water, mix it and then add the cool water.
