Pre Eclampis and HELLP Syndrome

I think its to late to change plus I'm just around the corner from this hospital which is good considering my last came with no pain until 20 minutes before he was born I need iv antibiotics too while in labour and if it started during rush hour getting to the other hospital would take an hour id probably give birth in the car lol the care has been appalling though I'm not having anymore after this one so pleased I won't have to go there again for maternity xx

The midwife today also said that it seems to be putting extra strain on my heart which is making me ill and very breathless all the time she wants me to rest as much as possible which is impossible with 4 kids I'm seeing consultant next week I'm going to mention all of this I don't want my health or my babies put in danger

You sound like they are keeping an eye on you which is great and with the steroids in place baby should be ok once they bring him I'm hoping they will bring this one early I can't take much more xx

hi ladies,

wow...u ladies have great strength.....

i lost my pumpkin @ 33 weeks though due to the hypertension....

and now with this pregnancy i am so worried.....i take my bp everyday and sometimes like the bottom part is high....

my doc have me on aldomet.....

i have read about the aspirin and calcium....and also about the labetalol....

i hope to GOD this time that me and my baby come home safe...and healthy...
i am currently just nine weeks

lets all keep updating so we can be of support

I just had an emergency C-section September 4 at 30 weeks because of HELLP Syndrome. Last night my husband was talking about trying to get pregnant again this time next year (so they won't be too far apart in age). But I'm still too raw and traumatized by what happend to even think of having another one...

Even after a normal straight forward delivery you would still probably not want to think about another yet hope you baby is ok and give yourself time you will know when its the right time to have another x

I would have a meeting with a MFM specialist before I would talk about getting pregnant again. HELLP is a very serious complication to have and you had it kind of early. Hope that you are recovering well. If you need any support or have any questions be sure to yell. I had a baby at 32 weeks. There is also a great preemie support page here as well.

I got pre-e and HELLP at 28 weeks and baby passed away in the NICU.

I'm also interested in hearing how others do in subsequent pregnancies.

Good luck to you xx

hello ladies,

shortcake.....hope all is well with u and baby....

i would second what rory said to see a mfm specialist or perinatologists to get the ok before preceeding forward with another pregnancy.....

so no new updates for me as yet......

before next month is over i would have done some more testing getting closer to a hypertensive therapy that works for me during this pregnancy.....

i am still on methyldopa/aldomet when i see most ladies are on labetalol...lose down aspirin, calcium and vitamin D...

Hi girls just thiught id come back and update, i made it all the way to 34 weeks before my bp started going up, they couldnt stablise it as it was up n down so all they could do was monitor it,at 35+ they finally gave me labetalol to which i had a funny reaction, got sick headaches my head was tingling and shaking anyway they gave me another bp med which worked brought bp down bloods were fine but still felt a bit shitty so they decided to give me a c section that day, and an hour later my son was born had no nicu time and was home in 2 days x

Methyldopa was the medicine of choice for over 25 years in the UK, until 2012 when it changed to labetalol, as it was shown to be more effective. So first line of defence is now labetalol, then methyldopa or nifedipine added in, they can also use a very fast acting form of nifedipine if they need to bring it down quickly in an emergency. In addition all women in the UK are now given low dose aspirin and vitamin D. I had my vitamin D levels tested after I developed HELLP at 28 weeks, a normal level is 50-150mg and mine came back at 2.4mg - horrendously low! I'm working on upping it before we try again.

I also took labetalol. How are you working on upping your vit. D? Food or supplements?

Hi Ladies,

With my first pregnancy, i had borderline high blood pressure at the begining, and once i was 18 weeks, they put me on labatalol to control it. All throughout my blood pressure was controlled, but then at 35 weeks, it started to go up. Did a 24 urine test and my blood pressure was still reading high, so they said to induce. I didn't ask much questions, i was naive and just listened to the dr. My daughter was born at 36 weeks.

This pregnancy, my blood pressure had been fine, but now at 33 weeks, its starting to go up. I asked my dr if my previous pregnancy if i was actually diagnosed with pre-e, and she said the levels were high enough that it was heading there and that after the baby was born, the levels were there, so yes i had it. Thats kind of confusing to me. So i guess i had it?

Now that my blood pressure has gone up, my dr has me part of this home care program where they come to the house to check on baby with a non-stress test machine. I check my urine everyday for protein. Supposed to check my blood pressure three times a day, everyday. And of course record kick counts of baby twice a day.
I'm not on medication to control the blood pressure. Other then a couple high blood pressure readings, and i have some protein in my urine, but it hasn't increased, I have no other signs of pre e.

I guess my question is...what symptoms did you guys have of pre-e? i've read some comments where they say it's "awful". What was awful?

I'm asking for information cuz as much as they say "if you have a headache, or feel sick, you could have pre-e", i would like to know more descriptively of what your symptoms felt like. I've never felt any symptoms of pre-e, and I almost feel like my dr has signed me up for this program where monitoring is excessive considering i haven't been diagnosed with anything other then hypertension, which isn't controlled with anything yet.

My symptoms that I didn't realize were symptoms- nausea and vomiting returned, facial swelling, pitting edema in my feet. For the most part I felt "normal" though. It was shocking to find I had severe pre-e and HELLP.

I didn't get preeclampsia until the end of my pregnancy with DD but I gained weight extremely quickly. Every time I went to the OB, my BP was fine so he'd tell me to "lay off the McDonalds", ugh. My face was so swollen it was physically painful but no one would tell me because they thought I was just getting fat. :(
