how would a baby born at 36 weeks do generally? how long would they have to stay in the nicu? is breastfeeding a 36 weeker possible?

also would having had steroid shots at 29/30 weeks make any difference for a baby born at 36 weeks?

Thanks ladies, im just wondering as I have a feeling baby will come sooner rather than later.

I delivered two of my 4 babies during the 36th week...labor started on it's own and they were never in the NICU. One was 7lbs and my other child was 5lbs 8oz. I never had any steroids as we had no idea they'd come early. So a baby born at 36 weeks doesn't necessarily mean it will be in the nicu or need any assistance :flower:

DS was born at 36wks- he was 6.3 and no NICU needed. No steriods. Formula Fed him.

DD1 was born at 36wks- she was 5.8, 2wk NICU stay for breathing issues. No Steriods. Pumped/Breastfed. Has latch issues so thus the pumping.....ETA: She was on Breathing tube (kind through nose) and feeding tube with an IV. Thats all the assistance she needed.

DD2 doesnt count, she was full term :)

but DS was an emergency c-sect and i was in full labor. DD1 was failure to progress so i think she wanted to come and then changed her little mind, lol.

ETA: Also, there is a woman i know who was preg with Triplets and they were born today at 35wks and about 4-5lbs each and only 1 has had any breathing issues. Of course its early still, but no NICU that i know of.

A good friend of mine had her LO at 36 weeks. She was small(just under 5lbs), but otherwise fine. She didn't have to go to the NICU, and they were home 2 days after the birth. She is 11 weeks old now and still doing great. My friend didn't have any steroids, her water broke so there wasn't time for it.

Thanks ladies, that makes me feel much better especially since I've had steroid shots. I hope my LO will stay put for atleast another few weeks.

my boss's wife had pre-term concerns (bed rest, progesterone, cervix stitch etc). They told her if she gave birth before the 36 week mark, it would mean an automatic NICU stay.

After 36 weeks the NICU would only be done if there were issues.
Typically they can stop contractions long enough to give you the steriod shots you need. So just keep an eye on those contractions and keep your doc updated.

Thanks :) I'm worried about having her early because I've got issues with blood pressure which are being controlled by medication as of right now. I'm worried my bp will spike though and I'll have to have to be induced or have a c-section.

I have had 2 at 36 weeks 1 of the was 5lbs 11oz spent 2 weeks in hospital and my other child 7lbs 6oz spent half the day in the nursery they the let him come back to me :)

Hey hun
Where i am, steroids arent given after 34 weeks. And by best friends LO was a 34 weeker, she didnt need breathing assistance and was home within the week. It totally depends on baby but 36 weeks is very very good :)

I delivered a surrogate baby at 34w5d and he didn't need any nicu time at all. He also had the sterioids around 31-32 weeks. He latched right on to his mom (she induced lactation) with no issues whatsoever.

I've had 2 around that gestation. My 1st daughter was born at exactly 36 weeks, I didn't have steroid injections, she weighed 5lb 4oz & was fine, no breathing issues at all, she just had to go under a heater for a few hours as she had a bit of trouble maintaining her temperature. We went home 2 days later. My 2nd daughter was born at 35+4 weeks, I had had steroid injections with her as I'd had a bit of bleeding 10 days before & they thought she may be born early, she weighed 5lb 12oz, she was absolutely fine & we went home 24 hours later x
