I'm taking vitamins at the moment - as others have said it's best to get your folic acid levels up before you even get pregnant, plus the other vits are good for you.
I'm taking a standard multivitamin and an extra folic acid tablet at the mo, but I'll move onto a proper prenatal when I come off the pill as standard multivitamins contain a lot of vitamin A which you're not supposed to take when pregnant. (Also if I buy a real prenatal now, my OH may have a panic attack when he sees them in the cupboard!)

I was taking a standard multivitamin while we were trying, and ended up getting too much vitamins. I had a calcium deposit build up on my wrist (that went away shortly after stopping).
I would stick to prenatals.
