Probable H1N1 in 1st trimester...

Ok so I found out on boxing day i was prego, part of what made me do a test was because i didnt feel right. the day after boxing day however, i started to come down with flu symptoms, and by the monday I had every H1N1 symptom you could tick and no Docs surgeries open!!!!!! so phoned NHS24 in a bit of a panic as didn't want to take medication but had fever, pounding headache, aching limbs joints muscles - you name it, got sent along to local out of hours service who said sounded like swine flu as my temp was over 38.5 C and all other symptoms but obviously they dont do swabs anymore so said it up t ome if i wanted the antiviral stuff, i said no. I was told paracetamol (acetaminophen) was safe to take by the doc (after being told NO by pharmacist and therefore having extra day of pain grrrr) so i decided to stick with the para to keep fever down and just ride out the rest of the symptoms.

A week later NOW im paranoid that all this violent coughing is going to "dislodge" the 6 week old embryo. i know logically it's probably not possible but im still paranoid, have pulled muscles in my back and all around my ribs, collarbones and sternum all hurt. It was also suggested to me i get the flu vaccine ASAP when im well again.

has anyone had flu in 1st trimester of pregnancy!? or the vaccination? I keep reading different things about it, some places say it's safe other places say it's not, and other places say theres not enough evidence either way....i wish there was just a definitive "YES this is safe" or "NO this isnt" without all this faffing about with "ooh this causes birth defects in rats when given at LD90 doses!"

I had flu with a stomach bug at 7 weeks pregnant and I am now 32 weeks pregnant and everything is fine. It was not H1N1, but from what I can tell that virus is most dangerous late in pregnancy and not at the beginning. While it is normal to worry in first trimester your baby is highly unlikely to get dislodged - even a car accident that is quite bad is often not enough to dislodge a fetus - the only thing that seems to dislodg them most of the time is if they are not genetically able to survive (something is wrong)

When do you have your first appointment and scan? I took paracetamol with the flu I had to keep my temp down and also so I would feel better and have taken it again later in pregnancy for other things. If you need an atibiotic go and get one prescribed by a doctor - amoxicillin is the most commonly used one in pregnancy.

from what i understand the problem with the illness and pregnancy is that due to lower immune systems from being pregnant AND decreased lung capacity (in later pregnancy, due to baby) the illness really affects pregnant women and can cause respiratory problems leading on the secondary compliactions.

So i genunely dont think it will have affected the baby in any way, dont know what your preferance would have been to the flu jab but different people have said different things about if you need it if you have had it. so check with your doctor.

Thank you girlies, i can read all the info on the internet i want and still sit here paranoid, but someone telling me they've had flu during pregy and baby was fine...... much more comforting!

You'll be fine hun. Coughing in pregnancy is not enough to affect baby. I had cervical incompetence and twins in my last pregnancy, but a nast bout of flu and a cough didn't harm them. nor did my cervix fail.

I'd recommend getting the vaccine tho, but wait til after 14wks. Swine flu is more dangerous in the third trimester, and the vaccine not wise in the first. I had it at 15wks with the twins, and all was well x
