Has any any experience or knowledge or these anti sickness tablets? Doc wants OH to take these.

My GP spoke about putting me on Prochlorperazine, but he said that the effects of the drug on pregnancy are not yet known and it should only ever be used when the benefit outweighs the risk. ie, you're so ill that you're not getting enough nutrition, and you're at risk of harming the baby or of having a miscarriage.

Here's some reading for you:

Thats actually quite grim reading. Why the heck would he prescribe that given that she has not been hospitalised and her uncontrollable vomiting has only just started?

i take these they rnt very effective, the effects on the unborn baby are unknown but thousands of women take ti every year.

another note most anti sickness pills are from the anti psychotic family dont panic about that bit, they help with the vomiting but not that well and do nothing for my nausea

Thanks UV. I cant even get her to take a paracetamol so I've got no chance with this. Gonna try protein bars next I think. Been reading some stuff that suggests protein before bed helps. Will also move the time of day she takes her pronatal vit from morning to night as the iron in it can make you sick. Anything is worth a try.

Some pregnant women do get perscribed it, but my GP did make a fuss over it being very last resort.

A lot of morning sickness originates from low blood sugar levels as well as hormone levels. If she's not keeping much down, try innocent smoothies for vitamins and calcium (lots of calcium in oranges) ice lollies, ginger biscuits (we eat ginger when airsick from flying) and peppermint tea. Try to give her something before she gets out of bed in the morning as this is when our blood sugar is lowest and we'll feel the worst. (hence the term 'morning sickness)

Also, if you're worried about her getting the right vitamins and minerals, Boots stock something called 'Pregnacare'. It's folic acid plus everything a woman needs vitamin wise.

Don't do what I did the other day and drink lots of water when having a dodgy stomach. It doesn't stay down long ;)

Hi all, first post here and don't want to waste anyone's time. I've done some searching on this drug and if you read the entire select on the website giving the statistical data on birth defects (posted earlier with very concerned, not to take this drug, reply) you'll actually find there has been done quite a few studies on this drug and found there are no significant risk anomalies statiscaly speaking. It appears any defects were already statiscaly meant to happen so there was no correlation, in other words; it was just coincidence. Just wanted to point this out so no one prescribed the drug starts to overly worry without knowing all the facts: the supportive piece within the article is found in the bottom 3rd, while the top 2/3 can look rather hairy but truly is not. I'm not a doctor and am only trying to point out that the last part of the article is the most important. I neither condone nor condemn the use of this drug during anytime, let alone pregnancy, as I am unqualified to make any recommendation. I'd supply the link but can't as haven't posted enough - um, hence this is my first post comment at beginning :-) but it's the Drugs one.

I've been prescribed this after being hospitalised with HG & a different anti sickness pill not working (can't remember what it was called).

This medicine was recommended by the gynae department at the hospital & I was reassured by 3 of the gynae doctors that it is safe & has been used for years. They can't do studies on pregnant women, as its unethical, but it is not a new drug & has been used without problems.

For me, I have no choice but to take this. If i did not take this I would not be able to keep liquids down, which would damage me & therefore baby. I was reluctant to take medicines dying first trimester, but had no choice.

It does not help the nausea much, but has reduced my vomiting - I now vomit just once on waking, not each time I eat or drink.

Bare in mind that uncontrollable vomiting does not have to last long to make a woman dehydrated & therefore lead to hospitalisation & problems. So it depends whether your wife can keep liquid down, not how long she has had it. Being hospitalised for dehydration is not fun, so if you can take pills now to avoid it, that is what I would do.
