So I have two pumpkins ready to carve tonight, my toddler absolutely loves the idea of craving up a pumpkin, lol and so was excited to see the Tesco man bring his pumpkins today!

Anyway, I have never eaten it, my parents never did it, so this is my first pumpkin!

I'm thinking of making pumpkin soup or something, anyway, what does it taste like and what do you do with yours?

I make pumpkin soup and pumpkin pie.
Carving pumpkins arent actually that good for cooking with or eating. there are many other types you can get that a much tastier.

heres a good link;

Pumpkin tastes a little spicy...not hot spicy though. I always make pumpkin pie with whipped cream. Delicous! Pumpkin custard is also quite yummy as is Pumpkin Latte's.

With eating pumpkins...I dice up an onion, clove of garlic, deseeded red chilli, tbsp of chopped ginger, few tbsp of chopped coriander, couple of bay leaves...kg of diced pumpkin, just over a pint of veg stock.

Fry onion and garlic in a couple of tbsp of olive oil until soft, add the chilli, ginger, coriander, bay leaves and pumpkin. Dry fry for a few minutes. Add stock, bring to the boil, simmer until pumpkin is tender (about 25 mins)

Blitz up in batches, serve it a swirl of creme fraiche and some chopped coriander.

Deee-lish!

oohh that sounds wonderful!!

I have made it a lot this year!

I'm lazy when i make pumpkin pie, though, and buy pumpkin purée ready prepared

Oh so do I! I really don't know what the heck to do with a real pumpkin. :dohh:

Thanks everyone, thinking mine is just a craving pumpkin then. Will have to try it another time.

I take out all the seeds, rinse them off(get all the strings and pulp off) and roast them in the oven at 325 Fahrenheit for about 25 minutes with some salt, oil the baking sheet too. Really yummy and a good snack!

The seeds from the pumpkin you carve are still great baked. Pumpkin is very similar to sweet potato or butternut squash in flavor and can be used in similar ways.

Pumpkin tastes looovely. We make pumpkin tart. Although not with carving pumpkins.

Pumpkin is also really versatile - you can very easily go sweet or savoury. I find that it is especially nice at absorbing spices - so great for curries, soups, etc and then for the "gingerbread" spices: ginger, nutmeg, cardamom, allspice - those ones.

Pumpkin tastes a bit like butternut squash crossed with a watermelon. I made a gorgeous pumpkin and potato soup yesterday - pumpkin, large potato, half a red chilli, red onion, garlic, garam masala, cumin, sage, salt and pepper. Fried the onion, chilli and garlic in olive oil, added the rest for a few mins, then some water and whizzed it all up when soft - deeelish!

How can you tell if its just a carving pumpkin? And can you still eat it if it is? I was planning on making soup with it after girls had carved it x

Everything from the pumpkin gets dumped in this house, OH refuses to even try it because he reckons it smells too bad to taste good! :haha:

We just chuck it all. I also think pumpkin smells too vile to eat

It's usually smaller if its for eating and they and should have a sticker saying 'edible' or 'carving'. I've never tried to eat a carving pumpkin but they smell foul! I always thought they were edible ones just gone bad. There's not as much flesh in a carving pumpkin either, and what there is is not like an edible one where it's nice and soft, it's rock hard and slimy.
I'd probably just get an edible one and carve it afterwards if you wanted to try it :)

It's got a sticker on saying you can use flesh for eating and carve it for Halloween 😁 2 in 1 😀👍

I made pumpkin and potatoe spiced soup last yee i might try a pie this year :)
