My little girl, or should I say BIG girl! is a very fussy eater. She doesn't seem to want to eat but she goes through so many diapers everyday it's insane and she is gaining lots of weight. She is 15 lbs at 3 months.

So my question is, are there any women out there with babies that are fussy eaters and don't eat very much? On average I'd say she has 25 oz a day, sometimes less, sometimes more (usually only by 1-2 oz).

I know that if she is peeing lots she is well hydrated and she is gaining so not to worry. My mom said that she is just a curious baby, all she wants to do is look around at the world and see everything. And the only way I can actually get her to eat a lot in 1 sitting is if she is half asleep. And if she goes too long during the day before eating she refuses the bottle even if she is so hungry.

She is a very happy baby though so I am not worried about that. It's just that the doctors don't make sense. They say she should be getting 2 oz per pound of weight for the lower side of normal and 2.5 oz per pound for the higher side of normal. That would put her at 30 oz a day MINIMUM!

I've tried her on various different bottles but they gag her as she is used to the NUK bottles we use. I have also tried different formula but nothing works. I honestly think she is just curious about everything. She is such a strange eating baby. Any thoughts?

The most my daughter ever took right up to 6 months old was 24oz per day - that was enough for her.

She went from 6 bottles of 4 oz then onto 4 bottles of 6oz but never took more - she never fussed with it though.

25oz is plenty:flower:

Thank you. I just thought that they were supposed to have more. I hate doctors and their stupid "by the book" thoughts!

my LO is kind of the same. she rarely finishes a bottle at one sitting, but she's growing BIG and has enough dirty diapers.........

thank you so much for this post :flower:

my formula states Marcus should be on 4 oz per feed but i jsut cant get him to take it. he mostly takes 2 1/2 to 3 every 3-4 hours depending on his mood. he is using nappies fine but i just worried so much he wasnt feeding ok but it seems your LOs all do something similar.

its so hard esp when other people whose LOs are similar ages are on 5/6 oz a feed!!! xxx

My last LO was the same. He wouldn't drink over 4oz until he was around 6 months and that was with me taking him into a quiet room and singing and doing anything i could to get him to drink. We went through so many bottles and formulas to see if he would drink more but he didn't.

Thanks ladies. I guess Lily just isn't a big eater then!

Mine is the same. 17lbs and 28inches long. So He's growing great.
But if it's supposed to be 2oz for every pound, that would make 34oz for me right?

Yea, not even close. I'm lucky if I can get 21oz in him, the only time he will drink his whole bottle is if he's starting to nap or going to bed!

He's just like your little girl, way too curious and observant to be bothered with eating his bottle!

Glad to know it's normal then. Yesterday I got 24.5 oz in her and most of those oz was when she was halfway to sleep. Oh well! I will just ignore the doctor

Both of my girls are like this. Megan never ever wanted her bottles. It was so easy to give them up at 12 months as she could care less about them. The most she ever had for formula in a day was 25-30 oz. No matter what age. 30 was a lot for her. Then came solids. She did sooo good with solids. And a sippy cup which we started at 6 months. I would pour her formula in the sippy cups as she did better with it that way. As it was an active thing I think. She could still be sitting up being nosy while eating and drinking which is hard to do with a bottle. Both my girls are very nosy and too curious. They get distracted and want to look around. Jordan will only eat maybe 2 oz if we are in any room other than a dark bedroom with white noise on. Jordan is taking anywhere from 25-30 oz and that's because I've made sure to feed her in a dark room away from distractions now. If Megan distracts her, thats it. She is done with that bottle. Lol She will completly refuse to eat even for a whole day if I don't bring her into darkness. She had like 8oz a few days.... But then woke a lot those nights so I fed her then and she ate.

Jordan is doing this right now....

3-5 am waking for a bottle and going back to sleep
When waking for the day taking another bottle in the dark before we leave her room. If I leave her room she will only take 3oz at the most
She then refuses to eat until either first nap ( which is a silly time for it as that's 90minutes or so after she just ate ) or right after her nap But what I've been doing is not feeding her til her midday nap so now she is taking more at each sitting
She then has another bottle before her 3rd nap
5th bottle she has at bedtime
4-6 oz each bottle x 5 bottles

Megan never ever took 6 oz in a bottle, even at 12 months, she slept 12 hrs at night, then ate a very small bottle in the morning. She never wanted much right after waking. She had the rest of her bottle before first nap. So then she wasn't as hungry for her next bottle, and it just continued like that throughout the day. It was easier with solids as then I could have her eat more that way as bottles had been such a struggle. So then she was on meals and would have bottles before sleeping and it helped a lot as the bottle struggle wasn't that noticeable. If she didn't want to drink much she would just eat more solids at the next meal.
Megan is still very curious. She is a very smart toddler and very observant. Nothing gets by her!

There is no way jordan would have taken 5-6 oz at your lo's age. Your lo is 2 weeks? My baby wasn't even taking 2 oz at a feed at that age. She just started doing 5-6oz the past few weeks.

Yeah lily take 5 oz at the most now and she is almost 3 months. She was taking 2 oz at a time as a newborn.

Megan, Gabe had the opposite problem! he's a glutinous little beast, who would eat until he puked if we allowed it... He's 11.5 lbs and eats 40+ oz a day! He is still waking every 3 hours to eat, and is starving after 3 hours...lol

I say, as long as she is gaining weight normally, has enough wet/dirty diapers a day, who cares what the number of oz she "should" be eating. Clearly it's enough...

lol thats good! Lily is 15 lbs and she has five 5 oz bottles a day so she gets 25 oz per day and that's all I can get into her. She poops once a day but sometimes only every other day, and pees like 7 diapers a day with sometimes 2-3 pees in each one!

mine isnt a big eater. 24-28oz a day at 5 1/2 months....and never more than 4 oz at a time. sometimes she doesnt even finish her 4 oz and she will just start to smile and chew the nipple. drives me crazy as she is on neocate and wasting that is expensive....grrr.
