Hi

I've been giving me LO a formula bottle before bed but have been using that already made up stuff just to try him on it before I bought a full pack.

Well I've now bought a full pack and on the instructions it says boil kettle, leave no longer then 30 mins, make up bottle and then cool under cold running tap. Serve immediately.

Well I was under the impression you could make up bottles the night before and put them in the fridge and then heat them as and when u need them?

But after reading the instructions i'm confused? I didn't think u could reheat the milk once it had already been heated? Argh!!!:dohh:

I boil a kettle, leave it 30 mins, then put the water in a thermos to keep it that temp. I use this to make bottles up fresh each time. Thn it only takes a couple of mins to cool the bottle ready to go

I think that they dont advise you to do that anymore....I dont do it properly though! Oops, there's no way my littke girl would have waited for it to cool! After we sterilise the bottles, we put the freshly boiled water in them all ready for the next day! So when she wants a bottle we just stand it in hot water and add the powder!

It's a pain but you can't reheat the milk if its been made up two hours. After the two hours your supose to discard the stuff I don't bother too much now. But I started buying the ready made sma for night feeds they are great and also boiling hot water and pouring them into a few bottles then making up the powder separately so all that you need to do is add the powder to the water! My lo drinks it cold which is even easyier for us : ) x

So if I put the boiled water in the bottles and stick them in the fridge I can then add the powder to the water the next day? And it can be cold water? It would still mix the powder? Does this still kill the bacteria in the powder?

Ah sorry I've just read the answer to that.

It seems a real pain having to make up bottles everytime as and when, I can't imagine my LO wanting to wait around hungry for all that time!

The ready made stuff costs about £21 a week where as the powder works out about £13 a week.

I don't understand how the ready made stuff can be kept in the fridge for 24 hours though but u can't keep your own bottles in the fridge for the same amount of time?

That's the problem i think, if you add powder to cold water it isn't sterile. I used to make up a days worth of bottles the night before, i was told you could refrigerate them for 24hrs, so id boil the kettle, let it cool for half hour, mix in the powder then put the bottles in the fridge when they'd cooled a bit more. Then when she needed one id microwave for 20secs just to take the chill off, shake well to make sure of no hotspots then youre good to go! Its so much easier once they're on cows milk!

Yes you can buy a few small containers tommy tippee does them and scoop the powder you need like for eg 7 ounces. Then boil water and add water to your bottles and put the bottles aside till you need them. All you have to do is add the powder to the water! You can do that. You just can't make the milk up and use it hours down the line. Keep them separate till required!

It's all crap about can't add to cool sterile water. Would be careful with new borns but not an issue when they are a tad older.

I've lots of friends that do this.

So what's the difference between sma ready made milk which if open and not in the fridge has to be used within 2 hours but if it's in the fridge can be kept 24hrs and making up milk in a bottle and using a plastic disc instead of leaving the teat in and sterilise the teat when a feed is due? I've always made night feeds in advance and it's never been a problem. I don't keep longer than 12 hrs but don't see why you would be able to keep ready made milk for 24 hrs in the fridge but not milk made in a sterile container in the fridge for 24 hrs. It's the same stuff.

Honestly, I don't bother with any of that. I use room temp water from a jug (gerber water) and add powder. Takes less than a minute. I know the guidelines in the UK are more strict and I'm not necessarily saying you shouldn't bother but that's just what I do. Where I live, I've never known anyone to boil water or anything like that.

Buy this https://www.tommeetippee.co.uk/perfect-prep/

My friend just bought one (i've been eyeing one up for a while) and it's brilliant. No more premade bottles :D

:haha: I hear that about America all of the time. No-one sterilises bottles and just uses hot water from the tap.

If you're worried about the powder mixing at the right temperature just boil the kettle, leave then pour into the bottles after 30 mins. Add the powder to each bottle and then rapidly cool them under running water. Pop them in the fridge (towards the back) and reheat as needed. Use them all within 24 hours. We used that method when Hadley was little. It's not advised anymore but many do it. Just keep track of the age of the bottles and make sure they are at the back (the coolest part of the fridge)

Now what we do (she's almost 8 months) is fill up a days worth of bottles with cool sterile water. She has 9oz bottles and we fill them up to 7 oz. Then as we need them we top them up with 2 oz out of the boiling kettle. This gets the water to a nice drinkable temp and then we add the powder. Fast bottles! :)

When i was using comfort milk it had to be mixed with hot water or it wouldnt mix, so i used to keep a bottle of boiled water in the fridge, make my 5oz of powder with 2 ozsmof boiled water, then add 3 of cold and it was the perfect temp with no waiting, this would also kill the supposed bacteria. But to be honest, most of the time now i pre fill 2 bottles with boiled water and add powder when its cool and baby wants fed. Ive had no problems with this,i think the guidelines are over cautious.

We're advised to sterilize before first use, and after that just wash in hot water and soap. I can't even imagine having to sterilize every time!

Ready made formula is UHT, it is sterile upon opening therefore if stored in the fridge it is extremely unlikely any contamination can occur within 24 hours, powdered formula isn't sterile and with current manufacturing methods it isn't possible for it to be it can also legally contain a certain number of bacteria, viruses and other contaminants so if made up and stored in the fridge it could potentially breed bacteria and viruses. UK formulas were reconstituted by the companies making them to only mix properly with water at a certain temperature; with all the mainstream formulas that temperature is 70 degrees. If you call their helplines they can confirm this. Hipp did add probiotics to their formula and redesigned the powder to mix at 40-50 degrees but they have now had to remove the probiotics and are now instructing to make it up at 70 degrees again xx

And when they get a bit bigger you can sterilise a bottle, pour the hot water in, add the powder and top up with cold whole milk so it's not too hot. I do this during the day for my 10 month old.
