Question for formula feeding mummy's please

Ready made formula is UHT, it is sterile upon opening therefore if stored in the fridge it is extremely unlikely any contamination can occur within 24 hours, powdered formula isn't sterile and with current manufacturing methods it isn't possible for it to be it can also legally contain a certain number of bacteria, viruses and other contaminants so if made up and stored in the fridge it could potentially breed bacteria and viruses. UK formulas were reconstituted by the companies making them to only mix properly with water at a certain temperature; with all the mainstream formulas that temperature is 70 degrees. If you call their helplines they can confirm this. Hipp did add probiotics to their formula and redesigned the powder to mix at 40-50 degrees but they have now had to remove the probiotics and are now instructing to make it up at 70 degrees again xx

So, is the powder not sterile when mixed with boiling hot water? (above 70 degrees) I honestly think they are over cautious but that is just my view. Of course everyone has to do it a way they're happy with

I pour boiled water (roughly 3oz) into sterile bottles and leave them on the side to cool. When he's due a feed, I add 2oz of freshly boiled water and the powder. They usually need immersing in cold water for a min or two but are roughly the perfect temp. At night, we take two bottles of boiled water to bed and two containers of powder. By 3am (first feed) it's room temp and he has it like that. Same for the 6am feed. I don't think you're supposed to do that as the milk powder isn't sterile BUT we do it just for those feeds!

The heat of the water sterilises anything that is potentially in the powder; however its not foolproof and some types of bacteria/viruses can survive that temperature of water and over a longer time, start to multiply again. UHT is different because it is subjected to 'ultra high temperatures' and so anything in the milk is killed stone dead and cannot start to reproduce. I know in the UK the formula companies were not keen to implement this guideline but they performed their own risk assessments and decided it was necessary its a personal choice but if I was using formula again I would go by the guidelines :flower: xx

Would this mean if u use rtf all the time u dont need to sterilise?

Buy this https://www.tommeetippee.co.uk/perfect-prep/

My friend just bought one (i've been eyeing one up for a while) and it's brilliant. No more premade bottles :D

That is brilliant! What a fab contraction! Defo buying one of these tomorrow! Thanks! Xxx

Another question too, when I'm measuring 7 scoops into the bottle the steam makes the powder stick to the spoon to I can't measure it properly! Is there any other way of doing this?

If you find a way please let me know too :haha: :flower:

They expect everyone's baby to be perfectly predictable. If I've learned anything about babies over nine weeks it's that they definitely are *not* predictable!

I was just scrolling the Internet and a few people recommend these

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000MMQO7O?ie=UTF8&force-full-site=1&ref_=aw_bottom_links

Has anyone tried them? Meant to be easier than using the scoop so it doesn't stick...

Tommee Tippee make one too

Personally I found them a bit of a faff as it was a pain to get all of the formula out. Can't remember which one I bought though, other brands might be different.

I have a Perfect Prep machine and premeasure the formula into dispensers (similar to the one in the link). It's definitely quicker and easier to do this (you don't have to worry about
miscounting scoops when you're half asleep) but as pp said, the formula tends to collect in the corners so it's difficult to get every last bit out. Plus, I'm dispensing formula using a dry scoop into a dry dispenser and it still clogs up and sticks to the spoon. I think it just has a sticky consistency. If you find a way to avoid it please let me know though!

What's your opinion on the perfect prep? I've reserved one but wondering whether to get it or not xxx

I love it, can't imagine going back to the old way now. It just makes life so much easier. You won't regret getting one!

This is exactly the same as we do. Another fan of the perfect prep machine it's a god send to me as a FTM with so much different advice on preparing bottles this machine is great!
