I was wondering if for those on fragmin did you get any special treatment? like extra scans and stuff?
Anna, I think it really depends on why you are on fragmin.
I'm on low molecular weight heparin when pregnant (sadly not right now) due to thrombophilia and previous problems with DVT/PE, plus two mmcs.
Not sure if it helps, but I have been promised extra scans at the beginning because of the miscarriages (possibly linked to thrombophilia) and extra growth scans at the end due to the thrombophilia and risk of clots in the placenta.
In that case, i would assume you would have a consultancy led pregnancy. When i became pregnant i made a really early appointment with a midwife to discuss my medical problems and she referred me right away. May i ask what caused your PEs? Do you have a known thromboPhilia? If you do, try and press for an urgent referral before 12 weeks. If it was due to surgery or something similar it's less urgent, i think. The fact that you are on life long warfarin suggests to me that you had more than one episode though so best seek attention early. The upshot is you might get to see your beanie more oftenwishing you all the best x x
What the midwife says is good. Have you already contacted your local midwifery team? Just tell them over the phone that you have some medical concerns and would like to see someone sooner rather than later.
Wishing you all the best and lots of beautiful scansxx
When you had the PE's, did they do lots of blood tests? When I had PE's they took all sorts of blood to test for blood disorders. Nothing showed up at the time (I was pregnant) but follow up blood tests (when no longer pregnant) showed I have APS/Hughes syndrome which is a kind of 'sticky blood' disorder. They still don't know if that caused the PE's, there were a lot of other risk factors for me too, twin pregnancy, long period of bed rest, ruptured membranes and then choriamnionitis. Plus, my BMI was around 30, which doesn't help.
I think if you've had PE's you'd have to at least have consultant led care in a joint obstetric/haemotology clinics and where I live, if you see a consultant, you get scanned at every appointment.
Anna, if everything goes well you should be fine to give birth whenever you need to.
The only thing I know you need to be careful of is that there needs to be a certain number of hours between your last fragmin shot and an epidural.
Midori, I remember your storyHope all is well with you xxx
I've been on Herparin since 4 weeks.
I've had two previous DVTs. I've not had any extra scans, only extra INR monitoring.
Fragmin is a brand of low molecular weight heparin. It is indeed different to unfractioned heparin which is given in a drip. Most people refer to the newer style injectable lmwh as heparin though and i am guessing that is what lastcall is on. A lot of people use the brand clexane instead of fragmin and my injections are called tinzaparin. Ok, enough of the lecturingsorry! Lastcall, do you know what the reason for your dvts was?
Oh you poor thing! I was wondering how I'm going to cope when i move to twice a day shots. Did you know you can take them in your thigh, too? I used to have them there after a knee operation but didn't do them myself so don't know if there are any rules to follow. Apparently bingo wings work too if you have them but personally i think that's an area that is too exposed for bruises and how on earth would you pinch and inject with the same hand? Lol
Yup, I'm on Innohep, its a lmwh.
