Hi i haven't yet decided if i am going to breastfeed for a while first, but i have brought SMA first formula milk (yellow one) and it states how many spoons to how many oz of water compared with the weight of the baby. It starts at 7lb 3/4 and its 3oz and 3 spoons. However my baby at the moment weighs just over 5lb (he's small) and i dont think he will make it to 7lb before he is full term and i may be induced and have him early. I was just wondering can i give him this milk and just make up 2oz of water and 2 spoons or do i make 3oz - for a 7lb 3/4 baby - and just not give him all of it?

If i breastfeed for a while i will also need to know how much to feed him, i think he'll be about 6lb - 6lb.6oz..i would express it and bottle feed as i think it could be easier to go onto formula.

Sorry if this sounds confusing....just need some advise/help before he arrives... thanks :) xx

I haven't been FFing for that long so my advice may not be as good as other mums here - but I'd say make up the 3oz bottles and see how much baby drinks. You can always adjust the bottle size. The worst that will happen will be that you waste a bit of formula.

my little one was only 4lb 14, i just made up 2 oz bottles, when your baby drinks it all regularly try making up 3oz as they may want more. you don't have to start with what the tin says as its just a guide all babies drink what they need. Ollie is 4 months and he still only has about 5oz but I make 6oz as sometimes he drinks it all.

Also, I expressed milk for a few days and I was getting about 2oz at first ( I stopped after a couple of weeks though), you need to make sure you use the breat pump as much as you can to get your milk flowing (my hospital said upto 10 times a day)

Making up 2oz bottles is the standard for bottlefeeding with formula when bubs is first born.. So do that, even if you breastfeed for a while first, and see where it gets you..
The rule with bottlefeeding tends to be that you make 1 oz over what they're actually drinking, (if they're drinking 2oz you make 3oz up after a week on 2oz) that way if they get to want a little more you're not wasting too much, and won't be taken too much by surprise!

My LO was full term 8lbs & couldnt take more than 2 oz for the 1st 2 wks. I think it depends on the baby.

I bf firstly and its more of a feed on demand with that as its not as rich and filling as formula. I decided to try and express but i couldnt do it because of the pain but I prepared bottles in advance as you can freeze it. I use formula now and my advice to you would be you dont have to follow the tin, its just an advisory/example. Most babies are drinking 5 - 6oz at 5 weeks which if you look on the sma tin, is too much for a baby of that age so if i were you id just make the 3oz as what baby doesnt want then baby will leave. you'll find that if baby drains all of its bottles then baby will want more. hope this helps a little

i just make an oz over what Ollie takes just now he takes 4oz and i make up a bottle of 5 sometimes he finishes it but not usually in the hopsital they gave us bottles with 90ml in it which i think is 3oz..they gave this to all the babys regardless of birth weight so id probably just make up the 3 and see what he leaves xx
