Hi all,

I have been reading all the threads about how you all prep your bottles and have a question. When you boil the water and put the cold water in bottles and put them in the fridge to add hot water later so it will be ready to drink. When you mix them like this the temperature will be less than 70 degrees which is necessary to kill the bacteria from milk (I read this somewhere) I was thinking of adding powder to hot water and then adding cold one but dissolving 5 spoons of powder in 1 oz of water looks like a impossible task...
Yesterday I prepped the bottles and just put them in the fridge and just warmed them up as I needed them. Gosh this all is sooooo confusing:dohh:

I would really appreciate your opinion :flower:

I've done them so many ways. But now I put 5oz of cooled boiled water in the bottles and then when needed I top them up with 3oz of fresh boiled water and add the powder. Seems to work for us and my LO is fine.

This is pretty much the same as how I do Erin's bottles, I put half the amount of boiled water into sterilised bottles, let them cool and then put them in the fridge, then when needed add the other half of fresh boiled water and formula. We've never had any problems with this way

my midwife told me to sterilise bottles, add the amount of boiled water i need and leave them out so they are at room temp. then when i need a bottle i can just get one from the shelf, add the formula and alls good! i can heat it up if i want in a jug of hot water which i do. i only mke up 3 at a time and make sure they are used within 12 hours. seems to be ok so far.

I make 6 bottles up fresh in the morning and LO has them at room temp when she's hungry. I've never had any problems doing it this way, in fact I had more problems (projectile vomiting etc..) when I made them up as she needed them! It's just finding what works for you really :) Oh, and baby takes her feeds better when they're not warmed which is a bit of a bonus!

So, you are right the temp will not be hot enough to kill off any bacteria.

Here's the way I do it - it will take exact same time - time it takes to boil a little water in kettle.

I sterilise bottles in the morning and add about 4oz water in each. Leave to side.

When Anna wants fed, she is on a 6oz bottle, I boil kettle and put 2 oz fresh boiled water into an empty bottle and add 6 scoops (powder added at right temp) then I add 4oz of the cool water from the other bottles. It is at perfect temp for her to drink too!!

glad I found this thread - we are trying formula for the first time today and I have to say I am pretty stressed about it! temperature, quantities, how to dissolve it without getting too much air in it.... phew! first attempt this morning was a disaster - I made it too hot and it took ages to cool, then he only took 2oz out of 6 but then when I was throwing the rest away I saw it hadn't dissoved properly and there were big lumps in it. what a bad mummy...

I like the idea of having some water at room temp and topping up with hot water.... think I'll try that.

This is how I do Evie's bottles. I always heat her bottles too cos she hates them cold/room temp!!

As for mixing the formula without adding too much air (Luciloo mentioned this) I've always found that swirling the bottle is pretty good. You dont get too many air bubbles and as long as you swirl it well, the powder dissolves well :)

That's what I do too..
