Recurrent Miscarriage Thread

Smidgen thank you for sharing your happy story, we need as many as we can to keep us going. I am very early pregnant (4+3) but scared to death after 4 losses. I have an appointment with Mr Shehata in April but we booked it a few days before we found out I was pregnant, think we may need to cancel it and re book should I miscarry. I wish i could be tested for the nkc while I am pregnant as I fear if I have this problem I am doomed alreadt

Smidgen do you mind me asking how much all ur treatment cost? I dont have private healthcare unfortunately!! xx

stardust - you can be tested for nkcells during your pregnancy. Mr Shehata said it wasn't necessary to re-test whilst I was pregnant to see if the levels were up or down whilst taking his treatment although I know of another consultant in London who retests - so it is possible to have the test done whilst pregnant.

We didn't have private healthcare either... but I would remortgage my house if I had to - and will probably have to for baby #2 as I will only be working part-time by them with a wee one to look after. I think we estimated that between the tests, drugs, consultation fees, fees to healthcare at home for intralipid drips, and travel and accommodation - prob about £7k. I think we had approx 10 trips down from Scotland between Apr - Dec 2010 and we only had to pay accommodation for 2 of them - the other 8 we stayed with our friends. Bear in mind that I also had to take Gonal-f injections and tamoxifen to help me get pregnant as Mr Shehata also tested my AMH - anti-mullarian hormone - which is an indicator of how many eggs, the quality etc of them. This came back barely detectable - 0.06 - hard to believe when I'd lost 4 babies. Anyway he said time was of the essence as I was 36 (will be 38 this year) and so wanted to give them a helping hand by stimulating my ovaries. I reckon you could probably take off £500 or so for the injections alone.
Any more questions, fire away. I know how helpless I felt when I was struggling to find answers. If I can help you in anyway, I will x

LivinginHope

We werent happy with the treatment we got from the Vic either. They were so dismissive, especially when I told them we were going to London for further tests - they basically said I'd be wasting time and money!

Contact number for Mr Shehata: 0208 4019 928

His PA is called Cheryl. We had our first appointment at his Harley Street Clinic and we had all the other appointments at his clinics in Surrey - it was easier and less stressful going to those ones as our friends stay in Surrey so we stayed with them during each visit (10 I think in total).

His website address is www.miscarriageclinic.co.uk

There's loads of useful info and case studies etc on there.

I'm keeping well(ish) now - had terrible morning noon and night sickness up to 24 weeks though! I remember saying "sick is Good" when I first started being sick at 7 weeks - they say the sicker the better, good hormone level etc - However I began to regret saying sick is better - lol!
I've got a lovely big bump now - which I love but I took a sudden dizzy turn on Sat and it turns out I've now got labrynthitis - inner ear infection - which has made me vomit again! Never mind - the thought of holding my much wanted baby in my arms in 10 weeks makes everything i've been through so worthwhile!

Where in Fife are you? I'm in Glenrothes.

Awh poor thing, hope your ear infection clears up soon. I know what you mean tho sick is good :)

Thank you so much for the information, I will have a look and make contact with them. So nice to hear a success story

I'm in Leven - just along the road!!!

What a small world LivinginHope!

As I said to the other girls, if I can help in any way, answering whatever questions you have - just fire them at me - I'm only to glad to help.

Say Hi to Mr Shehata for me - he discharged me from his care in Dec once I reached 16 weeks. He's asked me to send a photo once the bubba is born but you could let him know I'm just swell :happydance:

I am sure you will get your bfp soon and a i'll pray for a sticky bean for you this month. I take my hat off to you and livinginhope2 - I thought I was going off my head after losing my 4th baby. So glad to see you have the strength to carry on after so many losses - but I understand that you'd do anything to get your dream of a baby.

Hi smidgen, I'm loving reading your story.. one question, what was the tamoxifen's purpose? I know this is used for breast cancer..xx

Ladies - feel free to PM if you ever have any questions. Stardust - glad to hear you are thinking of keeping your appointment.

Mandy - Mr Shehata prescribed Tamoxifen instead of Clomid. I had to take 80Mg from day 2-5 and then I had to take a Ovitrelle injection to make me ovulate.
So Tamoxifen works in the same way as Clomid - stimulates the ovaries to produce some good healthy follicles.
The benefit of tamoxifen was that i didn't get terrible side effects - eg stomach cramps and headaches. The downside was that on my first cycle of tamoxifen only - I had a cycle which lasted over 80 days!!! I was going off my head at this point as nothing seems to bring my period on. In the end I was given an injection and then tablets to take and it eventually arrived..(didnt start the gonal f injections until second cycle)

Hope that helps.

Hi ladies...

Been reading the debate on medication with interest...

I have had 3 m/c's and lost 4 babies - all at the 10-11 week point. I am now under the care of a fab Obs Cons at Frimley Park and she has told me that as soon as I get a BFP I am to start progesterone, fragmin, baby aspirin and have been on 5mg folic acid for 3 months.

I have just got my bfp and have started all my drugs... including the herparin injections which bloomin hurt... first scan on Thursday. If I can't do it this time with all these drugs to help I am well and truley taking the hint and giving up!!

Congrats Chilli chick! Yay! and Stardust... we gotta keep some PMA chick!

Congrats Padbrat! That's fab news. I am sure all the sore injections will be worth the pain when you finally get to hold your bubs!
