Hi All,

This is my first post on here so thank you for taking time to read it. My OH has had his second semen analysis results back today which are as below in black. The other set of results which were done 4 weeks ago are in the brackets.:

Sperm semen volume: 3ml (1.5ml)
Sperm Density:31 10*6/ml (108 10*6/ml)
Total normal & motile sperm: 10% (25%)
Rapid Progressive Sperm: 0% (8%)
Slow progressive sperm: 10% (17%)
Non-progressive sperm: 11% (4%)
Non-motile sperm: 79% (71%)

We're devastated and also unsure as to why the two set of results are so different. I had a laparoscopy for mild endo 3 weeks ago and always thought it was me who was the one to blame for our infertility, seemingly not so. Has anyone had these sorts of results and still gotten pregnant or is it impossible? I couldn't really take in what the GP was telling us. I guess we're probably looking at assisted fertility and have been referred to Guys & St Thomas' which scares the cr*p out of me so hoping one of you could put my frazzled mind at rest!

Thankyou

xx:cry:

I don't have any useful advice about being referred, but I know sperm results can vary.

With my DH it was the reverse of your situation. His first results were quite poor but we think it had more to do with the fact that the hospital in question expected him to provide a sample at home then rush to get it in to the hospital at an appointed time within an hour. I reckon the semen had started to deteriorate by the time they got to analyse it.

The second result was much more encouraging because he went to a different hospital where he was able to give the sample there and then and it was analysed immediately.

Is there anything your OH did or didn't do that could account for the difference in the results?

Thanks so much for your reply Hope3. My OH has been on the internet all night trying to find info on how much the results are affected by the amount of time it takes to get them into the lab and under the microscope. Both times he has had to 'produce' the sample at home, rush it to the hospital within an hour. The first time, the sample was in the lab and the results were completed within 2 hrs. . The second time, they weren't completed for 4.5 hours. We have decided we will go to a private clinic next week and try to get a third analysis which he can produce in the surgery therefore lessening the waiting around time for the sample

Thanks again for your input

x

Hi there!

I am currently recovering from recent laparoscopic surgery for mild endometriosis and my hubby just went in for his 3rd SA . We are still awaiting results but his other 2 were not very good. I did get a BFP once in over 2 years of TTC but it sadly ended in miscarriage. I don't know how helpful this is to you but I thought it might help to know someone else going through a similar situation. I will let you know what my doc says about next steps on Monday and my DH's latest SA results if you would like. I hope you will keep me posted on how you are doing as well. I hope you are able to find a little peace as you sort out your next steps!

Hi lilsoybean,
Seems you're both in a very similar situation to us! It does help knowing other people are going through what we are going through, although that sounds very selfish I know. I emailed the consultant who performed my lap yesterday as he is also a fertility specialist. I sent him my partner's results and he emailed back saying it wasn't all bad as the count on both tests was well above the 'normal' range. He said the issue was with the quality which can be improved via supplements, healthy lifestyle Etc. He actually gave us a list of the vitamins last time we were there and my partner has been on these for about 2.5 weeks now. The consultant said it takes around 10 weeks for these to start showing an improvement in the sperm so to have another analysis after this time and see where we're at. In the meantime, we will be referred to to assisted fertility clinic and just hope for the best in the mean time! I'm site you've looked into all the vitamins already but if you'd like me to send you a list and doses of what he's told us let me know

Please keep me updated with your progress x

Hi, my hubby did find out that he had high Prolactin levels which I guess can effect sperm so they put him on medicine to help correct that. His last bloods looked better after taking the medicine so hopefully that has helped improve his swimmers. He has also been taking Conception XR for the last 2 months which was prescribed by our fertility specialist to help sperm motility. The other meds were prescribed by a urologist that we were recommended to see after his first SA. I'm hoping those 2 things have helped.

I will post again tomorrow when I know a bit more. I don't know if I will get the SA results tomorrow though. Thanks for the info!
