Reflux treatment...Ranitidine(zantac)& Gaviscon

glad im not alone, although unlike most, dom is the reverse, night time feeds are perfect and i can normally get a full 4oz feed down his neck no problemo. Daytime however is a diff situation, he will get fussy 2oz in, so ill wind him, then to even put him back to the bottle he would start doing a muted moan...sometimes cry like chewbacca and push the bottle away, i couldnt get into the docs so her phone diagnosis was colic and told me to stop using dentinox colic relief and switch to infacol (WHICH SHE HAD TO GOOGLE might i add....)
I wasn't happy that i was told it was colic as dom has been fine on formula for over 7 weeks now,and had no colic symptoms what-so-ever. My trip to the docs just though was much better he said no way was it colic and dom has been put on infant gaviscon. Half a sachet to a 4oz feed, if no improvement, a full sachet then he wants to review him in 10 days. Im hoping this helps him but it seems like gaviscon isn't helping much with many babies :( does anyone have any other tips to get a feed down well? doms on the 9th centile as it is,(steady though not losing) but i don't want him to drop down IFYKWIM...its horrid seeing them in pain

My lil girl also feeds better at night and falls back to sleep quite easily compared to her day feeds. I don't know wether by keeping it calm and quiet helps as its just me and her in a dark room. Keep a food diary as it helps you work out what feeds are best. With reflux unfortunately little and often is better for them anyway as the bigger feeds they have the bigger their stomach gets so the more acid is produced. I was lucky to have a nurse as a friend otherwise they probably would've palmed me off with colic. However my Dr is superb and even rings to check on us in between appointments. If the gaviscon hasnt had an affect by a week go back. Ten days is too long to go if it doesnt work. Good luck! xxx

wow thank you! - well the past two days he's still been spitting up some feeds, and only taking around 2oz during the day, fantastically i managed two 5oz feeds in the night and one 4oz so hes making up for it on the night, i just don't want it to be forever, - Also! i dunno if it seems like the gaviscon is too thick for his bottles (ive had to go size 3 teat) anyone else had that? what are the better teats for it? the variflow? - thanks again, hes got his injections monday at the surgery maybe ill enquire then if the weekend goes badly xxxxx

Yeah 2/3oz during day then randomly 4/5oz. Lovely calm feeding at night. Gaviscon makes the milks thicker and gets thicker the longer its left in the milk and the cooler the milk gets. I went onto variflow teats. Mind you I could now open a tommee tippee store now the amount of stuff I have! I also bought the anti colic plus bottles... Very fidderly and not made a noticable difference but scared to swap back to the normal bottles. My trouble now is mainly the wind waking her in pain at about 4am every morning. Xxx

If your bubs is guzzeling with the size 3 teat he will take in more air which will make him worse wind wise so maybe variflow would be better. Mind you my lil girl loves to guzzle hers and often chocks when first put on bottle. I left ger on variflow even though she was taken off gaviscon as she seem to get frustrated on teat size 1. Xxx

got some variflow, i tried him on notch 1 and it just sprayed out of his mouth everywhere  - it seems 2 is too slow and 3 is a tad too fast(normal teats), there's nothing good for him atm :( his mood hasn't changed he['s still ratty, his night feeds are now lowering, he is no longer guzzling 5oz...we're down to 3oz :( he is also suffering with slight constipation, his stools are very firm, almost like adult poop now, and you can hear him grunting and struggling, he's still great of a night but as he's taking less hes getting up alot more often, he got up 4 times last night unlike his usual 2, im shattered, he's shattered,i can see hes hungry his gnawing on his fists alot, and he also barfed a fair bit this morning....im starting to wonder if its even helping - so im going by docs orders if the half sachet didn't work, we're now on one sachet, and ive split the 4oz feed into two 2oz feeds....see how we go...this is hard work :( :hugs: xxx

Yeah it is hard work but you're doin well. It doesnt get much easier so be strong. Arc a me giving you advice... To be honest I think its just as tough on us as it is the bubs. Im in tears every other day. You will find he will be up loads at night so if you're working days you might want to re-think. Ive got my six week check 2mo... I actually be 7weeks but am struggling to walk as still in agony. Is very hard for us but you're doing well! Gaviscon will be whats making him constipated. What formula brand are you using? Xxx

gosh your bub is half doms age,i bet you're so tired :hugs: gladly im not back at work until oct/nov time in which i hope it has cleared up by then but still it is knackering, i find people who don't have kids don't seem to understand and underestimate the power that sleep deprivation has on a parent - and with them being ill too we have to be careful we dont make ourselves ill otherwise we won't be any good for them, its a vicious circle :(, yea i do feel the gaviscon has bound him up a fair bit, he has passed a stool twice today though so good going really - im on SMA gold, i did attempt turning to cow and gate, but he just kept barfing it up....and it stunk real bad (shame because i had loads of money off vouchers i ended up giving my mate! DOH!) so we're sticking with the SMA as he seems to take to it fairly well. Are you having LO's reflux looked at during this check up? xxxx :hugs: xxxx we'll get there, you need to rest up too hunny :) :flower:

Yeah the doc keeps upping her dose every week her weight increases and just have to keep on until she grows out of it. Things are looking up though she can be awake without screaming and actually smiles now too :). How has your boy developed it so late... I thought it was caused by an immature digestive system? Hope you're ok. I lost this post so took me a while to find it agai. Xx

i thought that it was odd how its only happened now too! maybe its a wrong diagnosis, but over the past 3 days i seem to be getting my boy back so it must be helping! he has a weigh in today so im hoping he didnt lose too much last wk, we had to take him in a&e screaming yday as he had a rash and wouldn't settle, apparently its urtacaria - an allergy/sensitivity to something, so hes not allowed in the sun unless he needs to be basically, which is rubbish :( im glad shes getting better chick! fantastic news! :hugs: ive ordered a repeat prescrip of gaviscon so hopefully thats ready today and then he's gotta go be reviewed :) so heres hoping for all! :flower:

Maybbaby, how are you getting on... Any better? X

MUCH better hun! he's also having a teensie bit of baby rice only for a small breakfast which has helped LOADS!...only issue i now have is dom keeps shoving his fingers into his mouth to chew on the back (molar part of gums on left side  ) and gags himself..But yep, it indeed seems he had reflux! xx
