refusing a toddler access to toilet in a shop...

I dont see how writing a letter is going to do anything. It isnt the shops fault that the OP's toddler needed the toilet in their shop

I think the OP was getting at the fact that maybe the Shop assistant could have possibly pushed their manager to let her use the bathroom...
As a previous employee of many retail outlets i used to do this on a regular occasion because when a child needs to go, they need to go.

its not up to the shop assistant or manager its usually a company policy.

Sorry but this used to really bother me when i worked at tesco the fact that someones child needed the toilet wasnt my responsibility.

I used to work on a retail world. Where there wasnt really any toilets.
We werent allowed to let people in because of the stock room. However I used to esscourt people to the toilet and back if they asked or had children.

I appreciate it may be policy for insurance reasons, but I would still ABSOLUTELY write a letter to the head of the company. Perhaps if they received enough feedback about the issue, they might be able to do something to change the policy in the future or at least realise that it IS an issue.

Still...how unfortunate for your LO. :-(

This annoyed my DH, he worked in a bookies and couldn't even allow a passer by and their kid because of the under 18 law. Can't do nothing about that.

I think the shop assistant should have said 'I'll stay here with your shopping and you can take her outside'. I asked a lady in m&s to look after my shopping because LO needed a wee. She said 'oh do you want to use the toilet' and took me through the stock room to use it. So it's a bit like some places go through with the policy and others don't. Which makes me think it's really silly!

I think a lot of people in retail go against policy just because it is ridiculous. But some people have evil managers who will make ou life not worth living for not following rules

Ive gone against managers all the time. HOwever ive never been liked by upper management, cos imnot a 'yes' person.

To be honest I just didn't want to be cleaning up someone elses pee and poo... way out of my job description when i worked in retail!! I would've thought the mum would've cleaned up though, not just left it!

It is company policy, but also a responsibility of a shop assistant/management if they say yes, to clearly outlay the fact that they have no insurance if they should fall/slip/get hurt by anything 'behind the scenes' of a shop.

Fair enough it wasn't your responsibility but you worked in Tesco, unless it was a small one they usually have toilets, also Tesco's are usually placed near other businesses that could possibly have toilets in them too.

ive bought zane a travel potty for occasions like this, no matter if im in a que that potty will be taken out so zane can go when he needs to until hes old enough to hold it in for aslong as is needed.

health and safety is crazy but there for a reason

It was a express.

Even if you told people that there is nothing stopping them getting youn in trouble if something did happen

your poor little girl.
it makes me so mad.
Bless her heart
Give her a big cuddle from me

omg i think it is absolutely awful how our sociery is changing :(

"its health and safety, we could get sued, red tape, head office instructions, not our responsibility if your child needs the toilet"

these are children we are talking about ffs, little toddlers not long potty trained - i have no idea how anyone could be so cruel as to refuse a child the chance to pee and have them wet themselves no matter what the excuse given is

how would these jobsworth shop assistants feel if it was THEIR toddler soaking wet and embarrassed :(

As a former "jobsworth shop assistant" i would understand that they were just following the rules and regulations that their job involved.

If i had let someone out the back to use the toilet and they had slipped/stolen something I could have lost my job.

I can understand why it is annoying but it is not the assistant/managers fault at all. Ive been on the receiving end of abuse from parents because i cant let their kids use the toilet and its not fair. It was not my fault their child needed the toilet and it wasnt my fault i couldnt let them

Sorry to sound like a knob but it really used to bother me that i got shouted at over this at work

But a child wetting them self and leaving a puddle is a health and safety issue too? You could get sued if something happend to them while using a staff toilet but the chances of that happening are a lot smaller than someone slipping over on a puddle of pee!

I had a similar thing in a takeway when i was pregnant, "oh we cant let you, health and safety"

"You ether let me use your loo or im going to wet myself and since im 31 weeks pregnant it wont be me cleaning it up because i cant bend down"

They let me use the loo.

i dont see why theres even an argument about this. yes its horrible that the OP poor girl wet herself and she wasnt allowed to use the staff toilet but that is the companies rules and the person was only doing their job!

its not in a shop assistants job description to bend the rules and let people use the loos when they could get in serious trouble.

ive gone by what my mum used to do and until we were old enough to hold wee in she carried around a potty for us to use if we really needed to. if my mum was going somewhere and she knew there wasnt a public toilet shed make us all go before we went out and then with my little sister she put her in pull ups just incase

ah yes but you have wet floor signs and mops for that

But you would have to leave the puddle while you went and got the signs

There is procedure for this.

You stand by the puddles until another staff member comes (or you shout for them depeding on how much work you feel like doing that day) and they take over the puddle whilst you get the sign
