Hi everyone. I want to return to college this year. I am in Scotland and want to study an hnc (Higher National Certificate) I would need to leave my job as it is a heavy workload.

I currently receive working tax credits, but obviously these would stop. I am confused as to what would happen regarding my benefits/funding as I would not only lose working tax credits but also my wage :S so would be around £600 down a month. Anyone got any idea who either to ask or what I'd get?

Thanks

I woud give your local university/college finance office a call and see what you can get. My Hubby is a full time student studying a 4 year degree and we are entitled (even with my working and claiming for my side) to loans and grants as well as childcare help *currently applying for this so do't know how much we'll get atm.

Student finance (I presume scotland has it's own branch) and the government websites should also be able to help.

Hope you get it sorted and good luck

Studying a HNC you will get a bursary and a student loan. You will also be able to still claim your child tax credits and child benefit. Im not sure of your circumstances etc but you may be able to claim housing benefit (this is what I am wondering as I too am looking to go to college). What college is it you are applying for? We are quite close, I am in Dundee. Atleast I think we're close?! haha x

Yes you would be able to claim housing benefit as ling as your a full time student with a dependent. Council tax would be exempt if your a student :)
