Hi

Can anyone help me please?

After I lost my first daughter in June 2010 I took 9 months statutory maternity leave and I returned to work at the beginning of March 2011. At this point I was 20 weeks pregnant with my rainbow. When I returned I dropped my hours from 37.5 to 32 hours.

I am due back at work in 6 weeks and will have taken 12 months off. I'm about to approach my work and ask if I can reduce my hours to 16 hours (2 days a week). If I am totally honest I don't want to go back but I kind of want to see what they will do. They have recently made a girl who is on maternity leave redundant (she was in a completely different area) and seeing as I might just resign anyway I would gladly take voluntary redundancy as I would get a v small pay off which frankly at the moment would be better than just walking away with nothing (I've worked there for 6 years).

Any ideas how I should word my initial email to them?

Thanks

Hi there

I would start by putting down your request for reduction in hours, the hours you would like to work and why............ eg

I am writing to request flexible working/reduction in total working hours due to family/child care commitments.( cross out which ever you think suits!)
My ideal working week would be x hours over 2 days.
I would be grateful if you would review my request and I would be willing to discuss this prior to my return to work.

i wouldn't put anything about redundancy until they mention it

good luck

Thank you. It's do stressful I've put off doing the email to hr/my boss.

I've been applying for other jobs but no joy at all. As a result I've decided that I need to think more seriously about returning to my old job.

Hope all goes well for you.

ACAS are independent employment advisors (google them!!) they may be able to help or answer any questions

If you want to apply for flexible working there is a specific process you have to follow:
https://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Employment/Employees/Flexibleworking/DG_10037051

You can just ask, but they don't have to consider it, but if you follow the correct process (and are entitled to) they have to consider it. It is much harder for them to ignore it if you follow the above process, and so if you are hoping for voluntary redundancy, it should make them take it more seriously.

Acas were actually pretty useless when i phoned them up. They like to remain impartial to everything, which meant they couldn't give me advice to help me in a dispute between myself and my employer. Citizens advice are better.

I recently asked for a reduction i hours and had to explain how it would be beneficial to both myself and the business
