I just had this crazy idea recently that maybe I should try running. I need the exercise. So does my dog, I'm sure she would love to have faster "walks":haha:

I am a little hesitant though. Where to start? Should I just switch from walking to running, or do I need a plan?
I also don't have jogging shoes. I have some brand new athletic shoes, but they're more walking shoes. I can't afford another brand new pair of shoes right now. I have a sports bra. It's not great because it's a little too small now, but nothing moves when I wear it.

Should I wait until I can be properly equipped, or just stop making excuses and start running?

Try couch to 5k (c25k), I believe this is a good place to start if you want to start running.

Yes c25k is brilliant. Also if on Facebook join the group Run Mummy Run. You'll get lots of support there's loads of ladies ranging from beginners to marathon runners on there.

They chat about anything... Running with pmt, recommendations for good sports bras etc. They're a lovely group of ladies. Was set up by a running mummy.

I agree C25K is a good starting point.

I'd be careful about your footwear though. When I started running I wasn't wearing proper running shoes and I ended up with a lot of lower leg pain. Shin splints weren't pleasant at all and meant I had to take a break to recover when I'd just started.

Good luck. I love running x

Run Mummy Run is a fantastic group! So much support there.
I started running in January with C25K podcast from NHS it is really good. However due to lil miss and hubby not having regular hours im still yet to get to week 2!!!

You ideally do need the right foot wear because you could cause yourself injury, but maybe start speed walking to begin with until you have the right trainers.

I love running :) brightens my mood aswell as toning me up!

the c25k program sounds great! They also have one for people with dogs, which takes 12 weeks instead of 9. Not sure I need that though... my dog is in better shape than me. :haha: 9 weeks sounds good.

I'll try for a week or two and if all goes well and if I have a bit of money, I will invest in new shoes. I don't think my shoes are too bad. They are athletic shoes and quite flexible.

One question though. The easiest time for me to run would be after my daughter is gone to bed, when I usually take a long walk with my dog. Problem is, that's usually a little less than an hour after dinner. Is that too soon? Maybe I should have a light dinner on evenings when I run, and then eat a little more after.
The only other time that I would have available would be early in the morning, but that would require the extra motivation of getting up early. I don't see myself sticking with that. I think it might be more realistic for now to do it at an easier time.

I think the start of the c25k is a mixture of running and walking. Building up slowly. You should be ok with that sort of gap between meal and run. Your body will soon tell you if it's not happy.

If can't get out then the 30 day shred DVD by Jullian Micheals is a great workout and each level only takes about 20 mins.

C25k is fab, I did it after ds was born and worked up to 8km really quickly. I haven't ran in ages though so I think I'll need to restart it again

Me and my OH have recently joined our local running club

When we went to our trial my OH had regular trainers and I had pumps lol we didn't wanna buy shoes until we knew we were going to stick it

We have since brought proper running shoes and noticed a .
massive difference So yes it's definitely worth getting the correct footwear

Our group runs 3 days a week - road running hill running and track running.

Also park run is on every Saturday morning at 9am Google it and your find your nearest one it happensI all over the world :) it's free and you can take the family down to watch and you just turn up as and when you fancy going

I find I'm more focused running in a group it's fab for socialising too
