The top girls name we have picked ive just found out that someone in town has a kid that would be 2 years older than what my baby will be with the same name, and the thing is they have the same surname as us aswell!!!! They arent related as far as i know but as soon as my hubby found that out he says the names off the table which sucks, what would you do? Would you still go with the same name?

If you don't spend much time with them and your kids won't be in the same class then I don't see the big deal and I would still use it.

Yea im guttered as :( ive never even met them. Just saw them post something on a local fb page about their kid and noticed it was the same name

Can you change the spelling in a way you like?

If you've never even met them then I really wouldn't be bothered at all! How big is your town?

Its maybe 4000 people so not big at all.

The name is isla so i cant think of any other ways to spell it

I'd still use it, unless your surname is really unique. We have a very common surname and my DS's name has become very popular in the last couple of years, I wouldn't be surprised if I come across another LO with his name and I don't think it would bother me.

That really sucks about the surname! That's the problematic part. If it's a small town and they will most likely go to the same school, even if there's 2 years and they won't be in the same class, I'd still abstain from using it for the confusion factor.

Maybe a double-name like Isla-Rose or Isla-Mae?

Really not a fan of double names. But what im thinking is people always move so maybe they or we myt move before my child goes to school, kinda hoping for a boy now so i dont need to worry bout this :p

Ayla is an alternative spelling. Btw - it wouldn't stop me using it if you aren't friends with them.

When you wrote this, it started to stick out at me that OP's daughter is Layla... Layla and Ayla would definitely be too close... But is Layla and Isla too close? It definitely didn't stick out as being very close just by looking at the names quick-quick but the similarity is starting to be hard to forget!

In this case, I'd perhaps chose a name that's not so close. You've got to be able to call them without them thinking the other is meant to answer. ;)
Do you like Diphtongs in names?
In that case could one of these names perhaps "click"?
Marei
Rayna
Raja
Aina
Anaiah
Aida
Maia

If it were me I'd 'try on' some other similar names (either similar sounding, or just similar feel) for a while and see if there is something you like even better.

But if you keep coming back to Isla and that is THE name, I'd just use it and pick a different middle name. Especially if your surname is a somewhat common one...it's likely to happen eventually anyway regardless of what name you choose. Yes, it would be a pain in school occasionally, but as they aren't in the same grade, probably not too often. And it is a temporary problem...she'll have the name forever, and you'll be saying it forever, so it would be good not to have regrets.

Yea i can see now that layla and isla are quite similar maybe thats y i liked it so much :dohh: both ending in "la" could get a bit confusing. Hmmmm i think it that name myt have to go in the bin. Oh well still got heaps of time to think of another name.
Thanks for everyones input. I think if it wasnt for the similarity in my dd name and this one i still would have picked it even with the other person in town

I'd leave it if it's the same surname. I went to middle school with a girl with the exact same name as me, I once got handed her sweaty gym kit in a bag because it has 'my' name on....Was like HELL NO that isn't mine :grr:

I went to school with a girl who was in the same class with the same first and last name and even same spelling (very common as the first name was very popular the year I was born so lots of people had similar names) we just used our middle inital (Alison L and Alison A) on test and work and never had a problem, I moved away to another town now and have a different surname now so dont let short term things change a whole life plan :)

I had an aunt Who spelled it Illah.
