Hey girls, hope you are all OK?? I hadn't even thought about whether I should be eating scampi or not,and have been merrily munching on it a few times since being pregnant. Its my 'going out' meal!! Anyway I'm having it for tea tonight, and someone asked me if I should be eating it as its shell fish, duh I never even thought about it. Anyway I'm fairly laid back about the what I should and shouldn't eat, but it has made me think. Its cooked at such a temperature, and frozen and then I make sure its piping hot, so surely its ok???? Please tell me it is??? I may cry if not

I had shrimp scampi several times when I was pregnant (my husband makes the best!) and I was never warned against it by the doc and never had any problems. As long as it's fully cooked and properly prepared, there shouldn't be any problem! Shrimp has quite a lot of healthy oils in it too, apparently. :)

 Yay, I thought it would be ok, we have proper wholetail scampi and like I said I make sure its hot. Shows how little I worry about food as I hadn't even thought of it!!! :haha:

Shrimp is fine during pregnancy, as long as you don't overdo it of course! I love shrimp, I had scampi with shrimp and scallops with garlic butter sauce the other day.. it was heavenly!

I say no worries if its cooked well!

I have heard some midwives say no to shellfish, but here the health region here says they're A-ok!

I've just read that as long as shell fish cooked through proper then it's ok! I've had scampi and cooked prawns, love them!!

isn't scampi just monkfish tail? regardless, as everyone else said, as long as it's cooked you can eat it, even if it's actual shellfish. enjoy!!

Scampi, YUM!! I love shrimp, have had is occasionally while pregnant, it's perfectly fine babes xx

As long as it's cooked then it's fine - yum yum!

Just as long as the scampi is cooked and your not eating more than 11oz of it in a week, shrimp is one of the highest shellfish/fish, that contain mercury.....its my fave but you just have to watch how much you consume. Enjoy Tea

Yum thankyou all I had my tea and enjoyed EVERY bite!!! Hope you've all had yummy teas to!

Scampi is different depending on whether you're in America or the UK!

Regardless what you had, I'm sure its fine.

From everything I have read prawns/shrimp actually have the one of the lowest concentration levels of mercury of any kind of fish/seafood. There was a big study done into mercury levels in the UK a few years ago - and this is the results:
https://www.food.gov.uk/multimedia/pdfs/fsis40_2003.pdf

If you can't be bothered to read it all, it basically gives the standard advice - avoid shark, marlin and swordfish and limit tuna. If you scroll to p13 you can see a table of levels of mercury in each type of fish sampled - and prawns are one of the lowest (this includes imported black tiger prawns, king prawns, giant tiger prawns, large king prawns and fantail prawns).

Lots of women avoid eating seafood during pregnancy which is a shame as actually it is very good for bubba's brain development!!
