Just had word that my wee poppet will be getting an op on Monday to fix her hernia. Really worried. I know its minor in the grand scheme of things after what she has been through and what some of your other wee ones have been through but I am still quite worried, natural I suppose. Going to the Neonatal Ward at Yorkhill for it so that will be strange, we managed to avoid that one when we were in SRI.

Suppose whats worse is they have said it might be a case that neither of us can stay with her.

Anyone's LO been through a hernia op?

Sorry if this seems trivial folks

Daniel had 2 inguinal hernia ops, the 1st when he was in SCBU and the 2nd just after he had been discharged and both were fine. With the 2nd we had to get to the hospital for 7am, we took him down about 9.30 and he was back with us by 11.30. We stayed overnight (well I did, hubby got told he couldn't stay too - altho both parents of the other baby in our room were allowed to :growlmad:) but were discharged early the next day. The scars are tiny, an inch at most.

I'll never forget the 1st one, he was only 3lb and the surgeon was a 6'6 giant! Terrified me looking at the 2 of them next to each other!

:hugs: for Monday xx

Leo had a hernia repair, but it was during his 7th week on the neonatal unit. I had to arrive for 7.30am. Do you know what kind of anaesthetic she will have? They did a spinal block on Leo so he was awake but numb. The nurses joked that he looked so well after his op, he could have walked back to the unit! Obviously it felt like a lifetime waiting in one way, but I was also surprised how quickly the surgeon called me to tell me it was over! He was on his feeds pretty much straight away and the only thing he complained about is that the cannula failed in his hand so thatwas sore. But he had an incision about an inch in length, had a dressing over it for 4 days and that was that :) x

Not sure what type of anaesthetic she will be having yet.

Thank you for sharing your experience though, its has helped. xx

I would suspect it is a spinal as if she were having general you would have been advised to keep her nil by mouth before hand.

Abby was at Yorkhill for her MRI and I found the staff there were fantastic.

I'll be thinking of you, anything you need, let me know.:hugs:

Good luck on Monday.

I know a couple of people who's child has been in yorkhill and they speak highly of it. It has a great reputation.

Xx

Thank you 25weeker, very much appreciated, I know it does come with a very good reputation. We have been for a few appointments there and the staff have always been great. xx

Good Luck for Monday :0)

Harry has 5 hernia's which were corrected back in October when he was 6 months actual and 2 months corrected, he had it done down my neck of the woods! He had general due to the amount and was down for about 6 hours (felt like 6 days)! We had to stay in for days but thats because harry struggled coming off the vent, he had only been off o2 for about 2 weeks.

Apart from his boy bits being black and blue, within 48 hours from the op, he was at home eating ice cream (had to let im have a treat, infact, i think he had ice cream for the rest of the week) Naughty mummy lol xxx

good luck to you and to jessica. ill keep you in my prayers xxx
ps passed you, barry(?) and jessica in town the other day lolxxx

Thanks girls, really appreciate the comments. Feeling a bit better about it today, just hoping they let me stay!

Wantabean you should have given us a shout!!

Ice cream!!! I am obviously lagging behind on the weaning!!!! lol. xx

They should let you stay over, where harry had his done, we were given an en suite room, with a seaview room, was like a little holiday! lol!

Im one of those mummies that let harry have everything (must to the shock of my people), he loves sweet chilli chicken, icecream and spare ribs.
He also loves corn on the cobs!!!

xx

Hey girls, just to let you know the op went well, all fixed. They gave Jessica a general anaesthetic which she has recovered from well.

Jessica is having to stay in another night as she has a bit of swelling and has picked up a wee cold so the wee scone is struggling a wee bit. She is off o2 and monitors etc though she is just getting antibiotics in case it is a wee infection and should be home tomorrow.

On the upside I am getting to stay!! However not a seaview, more of a view of some of the lovely Glasgow high rise flats etc!! lol

On the downside, when they were intubating Jessica they said it was hard to get the tube down so afterwards they called an ENT specialist. He doesnt think its anything serious as he says she would have shown difficulties before now but he wants her to go back in in a few weeks time to have another general anaesthetic and put a camera down to have a look (options seem to either be a bit of scarring from original ventilation or another strawberry birthmark - she has one on her head and one on her back already). You just get to the bottom of one thing and along comes another! Better to get it checked out right enough.

bob - You are quite right, thats how I want Jessica to be, I am quite a plain (read fussy!! lol) eater and I dont want her to be that way, I want her to try lots of different things). xx
