So first of all I am new to this site... Um Hello :flower:

Okay well I am 14 weeks preg and I am having the worst pains in my leg and it starts in my butt (sry TMI). I was talking to my mom about it and she called it Sciatica. Any one else experiencing this? Also any tips on how to help with the pain?:sad2:

:hugs:Welcome! Congratulations on your pregnancy.
Me too!!! - have shooting pains down legs and really bad lower backache. I think it's something to do with your body adjusting and moving around. I'm not sure what to do about it myself, am going the midwife tomorrow so if I find out anything I will let you know x

Sounds like Sciatica, I have it too. Had it before pg and its now come back!! just had to lay on the floor for ten minutes to align everything back!
so thats a good thing to try. lay flat on your back - no pillow- and try and relax you pelvis and back. It'll probably hurt to begin with, but it will get better.
From what I can gather, Sciatica is all to do with the irratation of the sciatic nerve which runs downs the lower back and through the leg. Usually due to poor posture or some other issue which has changed your posture. Very little we can do about it during pg.

Before I was pg, I went and had acupunture for it, which was amazing and am thinking about having it again.... if you do decided to follow this route however, make sure you go to a registered acupuncturist who garauntees the hygiene levels required for sticking needles in people!!

Hope I have helped.

Acupuncture! :saywhat:.... I have a huge fear of needles... so yeah thats not for me.. lol

So yeah.... but I am gonna have to try laying on the floor and see if that helps.

But for now I am stuck at work with a really bad pain in my butt! ](*,)

I know, I know i hd similar thoughts before having it done... never believed in this chinese hoodoo. However I cannot rave enough about it now that I have had it done!!!

But yeah, if you can't do it. Then initail relief is to lay down. .even if your at work, then find somewhere. Otherwise you might find you start getting your toes cramping up like i did this evening OUCH!!!!
After that, try walking around. You need to move around to move the nerve away from whatever is irratating it. Its only a short term measure, but it'lll help for a while.

I've been getting it to, funnily enough I was just chatting to my SIL on the phone about this!

SIL is a yoga teacher and has suggested a DVD - Tara Lee, pregnancy health yoga.
She said that the exercises on this DVD are great for those non-experienced at yoga as well as experienced at yoga. My SIL said it's best not to sit for too long and to keep doing the DVT execises I would do on long haul flights to help and to try swimming (breast stroke is best).

I personally have also found that doing my pelvic floor exercises late at night helps with the pain when I first lay down at night.

I have it something awful and am going to start yoga in yogamums soon . fingers crossed it helps

Antenatal water aerobics helped me with my back and leg pain. I think any pregnancy based classes like that would help!

My physio said to be careful about breaststroke legs when swimming- need to avoid it, as our hormones make us more prone to hip strain, and this is likely to cause trouble. Arm motion is fine, but use straight kick.

Hey ladies! For all of you with this problem My biggest suggestion is to go to the spa or where ever offeres massage therapy because it is not permanent where the nerve is stuck in bone or runs through a muscle it should just be impinged. Tell your massage therapist he/she can definately not only help with this but the low back pain, foot pain, and headaches!

Thanks everyone... Hopefully things get better soon. My hubby bought me a big yoga ball to sit on. It helps a little bit when I am in alot of pain but it doesnt get rid of it completely.

YES - it is LITERALLy a pain in the @$$! Heating pads work wonders!!!
