Ladies i said last week how i came down with a cold/bad throat, and the boots pharmacist couldn't give me anything except Halls Sweets https://images.chemistdirect.co.uk/images/productimages/large/halls_mentho-lyptus_sugar_free_10768.jpg

Anyway, i'd had 4 packs of them this week... tonight i read the label, it says "contains a source of phenylephrine" I've looked it up and its a big No No during pregnancy, especially first tri and can apparantly cause birth defects!! I'm so worried now after having 4 packs!!

Just tell your doctor what happened. I'm sure everything is fine, but just in case I'd give him/her a ring!

I would complaint to the pharmacist too! he should know his junk before giving it to pregnant women.

Thanks hun, i have my midwife appointment tomorrow so i will tell her, i just feel quite worried now incase something happens x

bring a sample so she can see everything and the amount.

Hi found this bit in searching

It's best to avoid the decongestants pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine, especially in the first 13 weeks of pregnancy, since there have been some reports of birth defects. Although the risk appears to be low, it could be higher if you're a smoker. After 13 weeks, occasional use of these medications — for example, once or twice daily for no more than a day or two — is probably safe. More frequent use, however, can reduce blood flow to the placenta.

It is low , but defo talk to ur GP or mw

Found another article

Does using phenylephrine in the first trimester cause birth defects?
Probably not. Two studies involving more than 1500 women who took phenylephrine in the first trimester did not show significantly increased risks for birth defects. Like pseudoephedrine, phenylephrine constricts blood vessels. However, studies have not looked at whether phenylephrine use is possibly associated with birth defects like gastroschisis.

Hope this helps but I do think your baby will be ok

I would speak with your midwife about it tomorrow. Honestly though...when I was pregnant with my son(didn't know it at the time), and was taking sudafed (OTC sinus medication), and was drinking (we were on vacation in the Dominican)...there are many things that could potentially harm a baby, but unless it's consumed in HUGE amounts for a long period of time, i'm sure you have nothing to worry about. I understand what you are feeling though and the worry... but I think baby will be alright! hugs!

I've used halls when sick, my doctor okay it. But I wasn't allowed anymore than four HALLS a day..Though this was regular halls... Talk to ur doctor if ur worried

The Dominican? is that the dominican republic?

I imagine the amount of phenylephrine in halls sweets would be very small, and most of the effects would be localised to your throat.

My OBGYN told me to talk Halls *in small amounts* for a cold I had while pregnant. Talk to your midwife, but I am sure your baby is fine.
