So I have recently had a hospital appointment (with a specialist) about the size of my little man and all my complications I've had during my pregnancy (mix up with dates, high hormone levels, sickness and pains etc) and after he and three other specialist reviewed all my medical notes from scans, blood tests, and my midwife check ups from the start of my pregnancy to now they have given me an answer as to why this pregnancy has been so hard and why my little man has grown so big.
They said this is the only possibility that would explain and fit everything in, and to be honest sounds exactly right to me.
He told me it was disappearing twin syndrome.... which is when you get pregnant with twins but in the early stages of pregnancy one dies (you either miscarry this twin or it is absorbed by the living one... gross).
They could not pick up the other heartbeat visually on my first ultrasounds because I had internal ultrasounds and it could have easily been behind the first one, however the heart trace picked up two beats, this was blown off at the start of my pregnancy when I came back at 12 weeks and there was only one baby.
My hormone levels were extremely high during the first stage of pregnancy and although have settled they are still a little higher than average, this was because my body was producing enough for both babies.
around the 8 week mark I got horrific pains (like a period) and some bleeding, I was admitted to hospital and checked but they still found one heart trace so said everything was fine. The specialist told me that this is when I would have miscarried one of the babies.
This news came as such a shock to me, and is really upsetting knowing I most probably lost one of my babies but I'm glad it was only one, and everyone at the start of my pregnancy had a hunch that I was carrying twins as I got a big tummy fast, was super sick and had a huge about of hormone for just one baby.
This is also where my mix up with due dates came from, because with a lot of twins one baby develops before the other, on my first ultrasound the believe they saw the first baby (the one I miscarried) and it measured my due date of 7th July, then after my pains and bleeding at the next ultrasound the saw the second baby and the gave me the due date of 26th July because he devolved later. Then the increased hormone levels that stayed after I miscarried the first baby made my little man grow and develop a lot faster, ending in him being big now.
Amazing but horrible that these things can happen but it surly made me feel so much more blessed to still have my little man, I can't imagine how It would have been to have two of them.
