Alex is 7 weeks old now and in a really good routine. He bottle feeds every 4 hours during the day and goes 8 hours at night, he's always been a very content little baby.

I've been feeding him 150ml (5oz) of Aptamil at each feed and the last few days he's been guzzling it down and crying at the end of the bottle or more food. He's hungry and crying again after 3 hours. My gut instinct is that he needs to go up to 180ml - which I have done for the time being - and this seems to be satisfying him, although he's guzzling all that down too.

I'm just worried because it says on the packet that he shouldn't be taking that much for another couple of weeks and I'm concerned I'm overfeeding him - am I doing the right thing or should I switch to hungry baby milk and decrease his feed amount?

If he wants it i would give him it, and the packet is just a guide so i would not worry, he goes 4 hrs so thats good and sounds like he is fine on the normal milk x

just up it an oz if he is draining the bottle x

Don't worry hun, you cannot over feed a small baby, you shouldn't deny them at this age it is just about demand feeding. If he wants more give it to him. You may find that he is just having a growth spurt and will slow down or stay at 180mls for a while xxx

I think you should be led by your babies needs, every baby is different they won't all follow the packet guidelines. (if only they did life would be so easy lol)

Trusts your instincts you are his mom.
x

Yeah my HV said it's a load of crap the guidelines on the back of the tin. Just give him more if he needs it , don't worry you can't overfeed him x

If he is vommiting then I think he is being overfed... Babies that young cant decide when they are full which is one reason weaning isnt until later when they can tell when theyre full and close their mouth or push it out with their tongue...

Babies have a natural urge to suckle, and its soothing for them.

Thanks ladies, I wasn't sure whether it was best to up the amount or give him something that kept him fuller for longer. He's been on the 6oz feeds for a couple of days though now and it seems to be working for him, he's not posseting up anymore than normal - guess he's just a growing little boy!

My little boy is also 7 weeks and is also on Aptimil First, he feeds roughly every 3 - 3.5 hours during the day, and for the past 10 days or so has been sleeping through the night :) so he's been having his last feed about 10pm ish and sleeping through until 7am. Anyway, he's pretty greedy, has been since day one......... I am still using the ready to use cartons and I put a full 200ml carton in his bottle for each feed. Half of the time he will drink 170-180mls, but the rest of the time he drains the whole lot! I don't really take much notice of the amounts on the side of the carton, if he's hungry then he's hungry :)

if he's drinking it i'd give him bit more rhys is on 4oz but doesnt always drink that he's quite a petite baby, his photo's are decieving lol he's 11lb now he's nearly 9 wks old.
rhys is a grazer but on the odd occasion he goes 4 hrs he'd easily guzzle 4oz he sleeps 10-11pm till 7am so i dont care what he does in the day,
we're only human and sometimes as adults we want more food at one meal than others so if he does decide after a while he cant drink the bigger portion thats fine too.
xx

My bub was a month ahead of what he should have been drinking, i say if he wants it..then by all means give it to him..i just found that you really gotta make sure you burp him properly if he's taking that much lol
